Tracy McGrady, Sugar Land Skeeters have mutual interest
Former NBA All-Star and independent league team Sugar Land Skeeters have confirmed there's mutual interest in McGrady joining the club as a pitcher. He is currently training with Roger Clemens.
Tuesday, both McGrady and the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League (an independent league team with no ties to Major League Baseball) confirmed that this wasn't just a rumor. McGrady is seriously attempting to work himself into position to join the Skeeters this summer.
McGrady isn't working out on his own. He has quite the established mentor. You may have heard of him, as he won seven Cy Youngs and an MVP during his decorated playing career.
"He's not there yet," Roger Clemens told the Houston Chronicle of his protege McGrady. "[He] needs more time and needs to react to live hitters and balls coming back [toward] him."
Clemens also confirmed word that McGrady was hitting 90 miles per hour on the radar gun.
The Skeeters released the following statement:
“Tracy McGrady is one of the most elite athletes of this era and we appreciate his interest in pursuing a life-long dream with the Sugar Land Skeeters and the Atlantic League. While the Atlantic League is considered the highest level of baseball outside of Major League Baseball, McGrady has demonstrated skill, determination and diligence during his training program at Constellation Field. We look forward to monitoring his progress.”
Again, the Skeeters aren't affiliated with the majors, though they have some major-league flavor on occasion. Clemens pitched for them a few years ago. Scott Kazmir actually made it back to the bigs last season after pitching for them for a bit. Some 2013 Skeeters who might be recognized by MLB fans: Koby Clemens (yes, Roger's son), Ryan Langerhans and Clay Hensley. The manager is former MLB All-Star Gary Gaetti.
Don't expect McGrady to make any noise whatsoever in terms of impacting MLB or even the minors, but if he makes a run at the Skeeters, it might provide for some entertainment this coming summer.
