Twins trying to hard to bring Ervin Santana into fold; bid is four years

SAN DIEGO -- Free agent righthander Ervin Santana is in talks with the Twins, who are pushing hard to get something done.

Minnesota is believed prepared to offer Santana a four-year deal for close to $50 million, which may prove decisive in this derby. The Giants, Royals and others are in the mix.

Santana is one of the free agents who struggled to find a job last winter and wound up signing with the Braves for $14.1 million, or exactly the figure he turned down as a qualifying offer from the Royals. This time, Santana is coming off a slightly better season, and though he is still saddled with the qualifying offer and draft-pick attachment, the market has been much more favorable.
