Ventura, Ryan meet for first time since famous 1993 brawl
White Sox manager Robin Ventura and Rangers president Nolan Ryan are tied in history due to a fight back in 1993. Friday the two met for the first time since the incident.
This past offseason the <span data-shortcode= White Sox" data-canon="Chicago Cubs" data-type="SPORTS_OBJECT_TEAM" id="shortcode0"> hired Robin Ventura to be their new manager. And then the schedule was released and we all noticed Ventura's Sox would open the season against the Texas Rangers. Sure, the two-time defending AL Champions. But also Nolan Ryan's Texas Rangers.
So, yes, immediately the thoughts of all long-time baseball fans shifted to a young Ventura charging a veteran Ryan and being headlocked and repeatedly punched.
Friday before the season-opener -- which you can follow on GameTracker -- the two met for the first time since the incident. And it was pretty bland. According to multiple outlets (ChicagoTribune.com being one), Ryan visited Ventura in the White Sox clubhouse and wished the new skipper luck. And that's it. Not that it's surprising. Both men are professionals and that "fight" happened almost 20 years ago.
If nothing else, though, at least their brief "meeting" gives me an excuse to post the video. Here it is:
