VIDEO: Carlos Gomez robs would-be Joey Votto HR to end game
Carlos Gomez may have made the defensive play of the year, given the circumstances. Here's the video.
Let us set the scene.
The Brewers were clinging to a one-run lead, 4-3, in the top of the ninth with a runner on first base and Reds superstar Joey Votto at the plate. Votto sends a pitch ticketed for the batter's eye -- a would-be home run that would give the Reds a 5-4 lead in the ninth. The Brewers would then be tasked with facing Aroldis Chapman.
But Gomez did this:
Given the degree of difficulty in terms of properly timing the jump in addition to knowing the the game is on the line, it doesn't get much better than that.
Then there's this:
Carlos Gomez just had his 4th HR-robbery of the season for Brewers. No one else in MLB entered the day with more than 2.— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) July 9, 2013
Then there's this, Gomez's offensive numbers: .308/.349/.552, 20 doubles, nine triples, 13 homers, 41 RBI, 49 runs and 20 stolen bases.
Welcome to stardom, Mr. Gomez.
