VIDEO: Juan Lagares continues to flash defensive prowess
Juan Lagares' defense has him in position to be a key part for the Mets future nucleus. Here's an example.
The Mets have found themselves an excellent defensive center fielder in Juan Lagares. Not many outside Queens may have noticed, considering the Mets being out of contention and Lagares not being a great hitter, but he deserves praise.
All defensive metrics have their flaws, so we have to take anything measuring range with a grain of salt. However, a cursory search of Fangraphs.com's Ultimate Zone Rating shows Lagares only trailing Carlos Gomez, A.J. Pollack and Lorenzo Cain among all major-league center fielders with at least 500 innings logged. Note that Lagares has only appeared in 84 games this season, too, so he hasn't had as much time to up his UZR score as, say, Gomez has.
Monday in Minnesota, he again showed off his excellent range:
The 24-year-old Lagares has shown enough in the minors to reasonably expect him to grow into a helpful hitter -- albeit likely without much power -- in the future. Add to that his outstanding defense at a premium defensive position and it appears Lagares can be part of the future nucleus along with the likes of David Wright, Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler.
