VIDEO: Ryne Sandberg arrives as a star in 1984
Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg arrived as a national star in Wrigley Field on June 23, 1984. Here is the footage.
Ryne Sandberg returns to Wrigley Field on Friday as a manager for the opposing Phillies. While he was with the Phillies for the first 13 games of his career, he spent 15 years and 2,151 games with the Cubs. His Hall of Fame plaque shows him wearing a Cubs cap. He was a 10-time All-Star, nine-time Gold Glover and seven-time Silver Slugger winner for the Cubs.
Sandberg's biggest game in Wrigley Field is widely believed to be the following:
Gotta love the '80s. I believe about 95 percent of the males in attendance were shirtless.
That was June 23, 1984, when Sandberg homered to tie the game in the ninth and 10th innings off Hall of Fame closer Bruce Sutter. The Cubs would go on to win the game behind Sandberg's seven RBI.
A star was born. Ryno would end up being the NL MVP that season, hitting .314/.367/.520 with 36 doubles, 19 triples, 19 homers, 84 RBI, 114 runs, 32 stolen bases and sparkling glove work. The Cubs won the NL East and played in the postseason for the first time since losing the World Series in 1945.
Friday, he returns to his former stomping grounds in enemy apparel. For many of us, it just doesn't seem right.
