Vinnie Pestano loses arbitration case to Indians, will earn $975,000 in 2014
Right-hander Vinnie Pestano lost his arbitration case to the Indians and will earn only $975,000 this coming season.
Pestano, 28, threw only 35 1/3 innings last season due to elbow inflammation. For his career, the team's primary setup man owns a 2.82 ERA (139 ERA+) with a 10.7 K/9 in 172 1/3 innings. Pestano figures to set up the recently signed John Axford in 2014.
Following the arbitration hearing, the three-person panel decides whether the player will earn the salary he filed or the salary the team filed. It's one or the other, nothing in between.
Pestano was eligible for arbitration for the first time this year. He will be eligible two more times before qualifying for free agency following the 2016 season.
