Wainwright, Phillies extend walk-related streaks on Thursday
Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright and the Phillies offense extended some walk-related streaks when they met on Thursday.
The Cardinals and Phillies opened a four-game series in Philadelphia on Thursday night, with St. Louis holding on for a 4-3 win. The game was also notable for a pair of walk-related streaks.
Cards ace Adam Wainwright came into the game having walked zero batters on the season. Not one free pass in his first three starts and 22 innings. No other pitcher was over 20 walk-less innings and only Bartolo Colon (19 innings) was over 13 walk-less innings.
Meanwhile, the Phillies offense as a whole had not drawn a walk in any of their three previous games. The last walk they drew came in the sixth inning of Sunday's game, when John Mayberry Jr. coaxed a free pass from Kevin Slowey of the Marlins. That was 105 plate appearances ago.
So what happened on Thursday when Wainwright met the Phillies? Pretty much exactly what you expect. He walked no one in seven innings while the Fightin's again drew no walks for the game. They're in a 143 plate appearance drought now. That's hard to believe. The last team to draw zero walks in a four-game span was the White Sox in August 2011.
Wainwright's streak of four consecutive walk-less starts is damn impressive, but it's not exactly rare. Both Colon and Dan Haren will try for their fifth consecutive walk-less streak in their next start, and Cliff Lee had a streak of five walk-less starts broken about a week ago. Still, throwing strikes is hard and Wainwright is excelling at it. The Phillies ... they're trying.
