The Yankees announced left-handed pitcher Chris Capuano has a Grade 2 quadriceps injury which will likely place him on the disabled list to begin the 2015 season, according to MLB.com.

“I’d be surprised if he’s not down for a while,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said, via The Journal News.

Capuano injured his quad in Wednesday's 10-6 spring training loss to the Red Sox. Capuano sustained the injury when covering first base during the game. An MRI revealed the extent of the injury.

Capuano was the favorite to open the season as the Yankees' fifth starter, though now it looks like the club will have to look elsewhere for that spot in the short term.

“We’ll look at everyone, that’s the bottom line,” Girardi said. “Because we need to fill a spot now.”
