Yankees to start David Phelps instead of Ivan Nova on Tuesday

The Yankees, locked in a loser-leave-town match with the Orioles for the AL East title, have made a change to their rotation for the final series of the regular season against Boston. CBSSports.com Insider Danny Knobler tweets that manager Joe Girardi says David Phelps will start Tuesday in place of Ivan Nova

Girardi's decision is rather easy to justify. This season, Nova has posted a 5.02 ERA across 170 1/3 innings. When you consider opposing hitters are slugging .511 against Nova and that he has given up 52 doubles (and a franchise-record 87 extra-base hits ... and 344 total bases), perhaps Nova is lucky his ERA isn't worse.

As for Phelps, he has posted a 3.34 ERA as a rookie swingman and a 3.81 ERA across 10 starts.
