Berrios did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks over six innings against the Mets. He struck out six. Berrios turned in yet another strong outing Saturday, allowing just one extra-base hit across six innings to tally his third quality start in his last four appearances. Across his last six starts (37.1 innings), Berrios owns a 2.17 ERA and 34:15 K:BB, and he's given up three or fewer runs in each of those outings. He is tentatively scheduled to take the mound next against the Astros at Rogers Centre.... See More ... See Less

Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Shuts out Twins over 5.2 innings
Berrios (5-4) got the win Sunday over the Twins, allowing no runs on four hits and five walks while striking out five over 5.2 innings. Berrios was able to work around five walks and keep the Twins off the scoreboard while tossing 94 pitches. Berrios got knocked around for 12 runs over his first two starts but has given up two runs or less in seven of his nine outings since. He's also exceeded five innings in eight consecutive starts and has provided the Jays with great length thus far. The 29-year-old is down to a 3.86 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 62:19 K:BB over 65.1 innings and is set up for a road matchup against the Mets next weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Stymies Tampa Bay
Berrios (4-4) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over seven innings against Tampa Bay. He struck out five. Berrios certainly got enough run support in Toronto's 20-1 victory. However, the 28-year-old right-hander was impressive as well, pitching through seven innings for the third time this season. Berrios has been solid of late, allowing eight runs over his last four outings (25.1 innings). Tuesday's performance lowered his ERA to 4.22 with a 1.28 WHIP and 57:14 K:BB through 59.2 innings this season.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Fans eight in quality start
Berrios (3-4) took the loss Thursday against the Yankees, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out eight. The right-hander was on the wrong end of the decision but still delivered his fourth quality start of the season, tossing 65 of 96 pitches for strikes before exiting. Since coughing up eight runs to the Royals in his season debut, Berrios has posted a 3.64 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 45:10 K:BB through 47 innings as he tries to put his awful 2022 behind him. His next outing figures to be a tough test however, as he's set to pitch early next week during a series in Tampa Bay.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Solid in no-decision
Berrios didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 5-2 win over Atlanta, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out three. The right-hander came up one out short of his fourth quality start in his last five outings, and while he put plenty of traffic on the bases, the only damage off Berrios came on a two-run blast by Marcell Ozuna in the second inning. Berrios tossed 65 of 101 pitches for strikes, and he'll take a 4.70 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 44:11 K:BB through 46 innings into his next start, likely to come at home next week against the Yankees.... Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Gives up fives runs on 11 hits
Berrios did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing five runs on 11 hits and two walks over 5.1 innings during a 6-5 loss to Boston. He struck out four. Berrios gave up three straight hits to start the game and found himself in an early 2-0 hole. The right-hander was able to settle down and got through the first with no more damage done and posted four scoreless frames before surrendering a solo shot to Jarren Duran and a two-run homer to Enmanuel Valdez in the sixth. Coming into the contest, Berrios had given up just 11 hits and three runs over his previous three starts (19 innings) and had a 18:2 K:BB during that stretch. However, his overall numbers have been marred by a couple of bad outings, and he currently holds a 5.29 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP over 34 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Tosses seven scoreless innings
Berrios (2-3) earned the win Tuesday, allowing no runs on four hits and one walk over seven innings in a 7-0 win over the White Sox. He struck out nine. Berrios turned in his best outing of the season Tuesday, giving up no runs for the first time in any of his five starts and setting a new high in punchouts with nine. The right-hander got out to a blazing start, striking out the side in the first and retiring 12 of his first 13 batters overall. Berrios owns a so-so 4.71 ERA with a 1.08 WHIP and a 9.42 K/9 so far this season. However, brighter days appear to be ahead, considering he has allowed just three runs over his last 19 innings and has gone seven frames in each of his last two starts.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Takes loss despite solid outing
Berrios (1-3) was the pitcher of record Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk over seven innings in an 8-1 loss to the Astros. He struck out three in the start. Berrios had his best outing of the season, completing seven full innings with just 77 pitches while effectively pitching to contact. However, Toronto's bats were kept quiet, resulting in the right-hander taking his third loss in four games. On an encouraging note, the 28-year-old didn't appear bothered by the knee issue that caused an early exit in his previous outing.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Set to start Wednesday
Berrios (knee) is listed as Toronto's probable starter for Wednesday's game at Houston, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. The right-hander exited Friday's start against the Rays after being struck in the knee by an 111.8-mph comebacker, but it appears he's been cleared to make his next turn through the rotation. The injury was tough luck for Berrios, who allowed just one run across five innings Friday after he posted an 11.17 ERA in his first two starts of the season.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Expected to make next start
Berrios was limited to 77 pitches Friday against the Rays after taking an 111.8 mph Yandy Diaz comebacker off the inside of his left knee, but he is expected to make his next start, Mitch Bannon of SI.com reports. Despite the early exit, this was still easily Berrios' best start of the year, as he gave up one earned run on four hits and zero walks while striking out six in five innings en route to his first win of the season. There's always a chance the knee feels worse in the coming days, but it's encouraging that manager John Schneider gave Berrios a vote of confidence right after the game. Assuming he stays on turn, Berrios would face the Astros in Houston next week.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Endures another poor outing
Berrios (0-2) took the loss against the Angels on Saturday, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out five batters over four innings. Berrios cruised through two scoreless innings and was handed a four-run lead heading into the bottom of the third, but that's when things began to fall apart for him. The right-hander gave up three runs between the third and fourth frames and allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base in the fifth -- one on his own error. When Mike Trout slammed a three-run homer off reliever Adam Cimber one batter after his departure, Berrios became responsible for the loss. It's been a tough start to the season for Berrios, as he's allowed 12 earned runs through his first 9.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Nickel-and-dimed by Royals
Berrios (0-1) gave up eight earned runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out seven in 5.2 innings Monday against the Royals. He took the loss. He was BABIP'd (.500) to death in this one, and generally seven strikeouts and two walks while going five-plus frames in the first start of the year would be a strong outing, but that obviously wasn't the case here. Coming off a puzzling 2022 campaign where he put up uncharacteristically high ratios (5.23 ERA, 1.42 WHIP), Berrios did little to earn the trust of his fantasy managers, although at least the strikeouts were there. The second of his two starts this week is tentatively scheduled for Saturday in Anaheim.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Impresses against O's
Berrios recorded five strikeouts while allowing one run over five-plus innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League start against the Orioles. The only run Berrios allowed came on a solo homer by Terrin Vavra in the sixth. The right-hander scattered six hits and issued one free pass in the solid outing. Berrios disappointed in 2022 with a 5.23 ERA in his 172 innings over 32 starts, but the 28-year-old's previous success gives him a realistic chance for a bounce-back campaign in 2023.... See More ... Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Rough outing in WBC
Berrios took the loss in Sunday's WBC game against Venezuela, coughing up six runs (five earned) on five hits and two walks over just one inning. He struck out one. The start was reminiscent of Berrios' struggles in 2022 for the Blue Jays as the right-hander missed his spots in the strike zone and got hit hard, with Anthony Santander's three-run homer being the biggest blow. Per Gregor Chisholm of The Toronto Star, Berrios has been working on some mechanical tweaks to improve his command, but it doesn't look like those efforts have paid off just yet. The 28-year-old had a 3.52 ERA and 26.1 percent strikeout rate in 2021 and his raw stuff isn't in question, but those numbers collapsed to 5.23 and 19.8 percent last year. Whether he can regain his prior form could be one of the keys to Toronto's fortunes this season, as well as those of fantasy GMs gambling on a rebound.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Solid spring debut
Berrios gave up two hits and a walk over two scoreless innings while striking out two in Tuesday's split-squad game against the Phillies. The 28-year-old right-hander is coming off the worst full season of his career, posting a 5.23 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 19.8 percent strikeout rate over 172 innings, so a good spring would go a long toward reassuring fantasy GMs considering whether to gamble on a rebound. Berrios is still locked into a rotation spot for the Blue Jays, but if his 2023 begins the way his 2022 ended, his leash could be fairly short.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Ends season in win column
Berrios (12-7) picked up the win in Monday's 5-1 victory over the Orioles, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out five. The right-hander wasn't exactly sharp, tossing 58 of 91 pitches for strikes, but Berrios did what he needed to do to end the regular season with a win. The quality start was his 17th of the year, and he'll take a bit of momentum into the playoffs after an erratic campaign that left him with a 5.23 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 149:45 K:BB through 172 innings.... Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Fans seven in seventh loss
Berrios (11-7) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up five runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.1 innings as the Blue Jays were downed 5-2 by the Yankees. He struck out seven. The seven Ks were his highest total since he fanned nine Yankees on Aug. 18, but that was the only silver lining to Berrios' performance. The right-hander had a run of three straight quality starts to begin September but has stumbled since, giving up 11 runs in his last two outings. His 5.37 ERA and 1.43 WHIP through 166 innings on the year remain very disappointing, considering he hadn't posted an ERA above 4.00 for a season since his 58.1-inning big-league debut in 2016.... Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Lasts just two innings
Berrios (11-6) took the loss Thursday, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk over two innings against Tampa Bay. He struck out one. Berrios surrendered a leadoff home run to Jonathan Aranda on just the second pitch he threw and it was mostly downhill from there. The right-hander would go on to allow two more runs in the inning and another three runs in the second inning before being replaced in the third. It was Berrios' shortest outing since his season opener April 8 in which he lasted just one-third of an inning, and it snapped a streak of three consecutive quality starts. He lines up to face the Yankees at home in his next start.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Quality start and win
Berrios (11-5) earned the win Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings against the Orioles. He struck out three. Berrios surrendered a two-run single to Gunnar Henderson to cut the Orioles' deficit to one in the third inning. The righty's last nine starts have been inconsistent, as he has allowed four runs or more in three of them and two earned runs or fewer in the other six. In addition, the 28-year-old has thrown six innings or more in six of those games and four innings or fewer in two.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Quality start Monday
Berrios didn't factor into the decision in Monday's win over the Rays, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out four. The Blue Jays gave Berrios an extra day of rest to set him up for a key AL East clash rather than having him face the Rangers on Sunday, and the right-hander responded with his fourth quality start in his last five outings. He sports a 2.93 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB through 30.2 innings over that stretch, and while his brutal first half continues to muddy his overall numbers, Berrios appears to be rounding into form just in time for a playoff push....
