Thompson has been released by the Twins, Seth Stohs of Twins Daily reports.
Thompson was assigned to minor league camp two weeks ago and will now search elsewhere for a roster spot. The 26-year-old lefty split last season between the majors and Triple-A, posting a 5.01 ERA across 32.1 innings for Minnesota.
Thompson was reassigned to Minnesota's minor league camp.
With Thompson sent to the minors, it increasingly looks like Fernando Abad will make the bullpen as a second lefty. Thompson looked to be the top lefty in the Minnesota bullpen last season after a strong first two months of the season (3.42 ERA), but he fell apart with nine earned runs in 8.1 innings after June 1 and then languished in the minors. He could be called up at some point this summer if Abad falters.
Thompson signed a minor league contract with Minnesota, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Thompson led the AL in appearances in the first half, with 41 in Minnesota's first 82 games, but the lefty quickly fell out of favor with the Twins and was sent to Triple-A Rochester in the beginning of July. With the Twins in need of lefty relievers, he'll get another chance to win a role in spring training.
Thompson has elected to become a free agent, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
He was outrighted from Minnesota's 40-man roster in October. Thompson led the AL in appearances in the first half, with 41 in Minnesota's first 82 games, but the lefty quickly fell out of favor with the Twins and was sent to Triple-A Rochester in the beginning of July.
Thompson was outrighted from the 40-man roster, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Thompson led the AL in appearances with 41 in Minnesota's first 82 games, but the lefty quickly fell out of favor with the Twins and was sent to Triple-A Rochester in the beginning of July. 2015 was the first year Thompson recorded more than seven innings with a major league club so it remains to be seen if he will elect to become a free agent.
The Twins are working without a dedicated long reliever. Tim Stauffer is on the 15-day disabled list, and the team decided to send Tommy Milone to Triple-A so he could remain a starter, instead of sending him to the bullpen.
Manager Paul Molitor said he'd mix and match pitchers in long-relief situations. Aaron Thompson got the first call, going 2 1/3 innings on Saturday. Ryan Pressly is probably next.
Pressly was promoted from Triple-A on Friday.
"Pressly is probably one of the longer guys I could use in a game right now, but it could change day to day," Molitor said, per MLB.com.
"It's all fine by me," Pressly said. "I just want to pitch and prove to them I've made some tweaks, and I'm not the same reliever that was all over the place in Spring Training. I just have to take the opportunity and run with it."
After throwing 35 pitches in Sunday's game, Twins manager Paul Molitor said pitcher Aaron Thompson will only pitch in Monday's contest at Kansas City in an emergency situation, reports the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
In 10 1/3 innings this season, Thompson has a 0.87 ERA.
The Twins are the underdogs (+143) against the Royals.
Twins starting pitcher Ervin Santana has been suspended 80 games without pay after testing positive for Stanozolol, which is a performance-enhancing substance, Major League Baseball announced Friday.
“We were disappointed to learn of the suspension of Ervin Santana for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," the Twins said in a statement Friday. "We fully support Major League Baseball’s policy and its efforts to eliminate performance enhancing substances from our game. Per the protocol outlined in the Joint Drug Program, the Minnesota Twins will not comment further on this matter.”
Santana's suspension comes a day after Braves pitcher Arodys Vizcaino was suspended 80 games for also testing positive for Stanozolol.
The 32-year-old Santana is in his first year with the Twins after signing a four-year, $55 million contract in the offseason. He also has a $14 million team option for a fifth year.
Mike Pelfrey, who lost out on the competition for the fifth spot in the rotation, will avoid a bullpen assignment and take Santana's spot in the rotation. Reliever Aaron Thompson was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to take Santana's roster spot.
"I am very disappointed that I tested positive for a performance enhancing drug," Santana said in a statement. "I am frustrated that I can't pinpoint how the substance in question entered my body. I would never knowingly take anything illegal to enhance my performance. What I can guarantee is I never knowingly took anything illegal to enhance my performance. That's just not me, never has ben and never will."
The Twins announced Monday they optioned reliever Aaron Thompson to Triple-A Rochester. Thompson went 1-1 with a 2.16 ERA and two saves in seven relief appearances this spring.
The Twins purchased the contract of pitcher Aaron Thompson from Triple-A Rochester Saturday, to take Samuel Deduno's roster spot.
Thompson has not appeared in the majors since 2011, and has a 3.98 ERA in 52 innings at Rochester this season.
The Twins made several roster moves Monday, which included releasing veteran reliever Matt Guerrier. The Twins also optioned pitcher Ryan Pressly, pitcher Michael Tonkin and catcher Chris Herrmann to Triple-A Rochester.
Lastly, the Twins reassigned six players to minor-league camp. They were Matt Hoffman , Aaron Thomspon, Deolis Guerra, Wilkin Ramirez, Doug Bernier and Deibinson Romero.
The Minnesota Twins have re-signed minor league pitcher Aaron Thompson Monday. Thompson was suspended for the first 50 games of the last season for violating baseball's drug policy. He returned to post a 2.76 ERA over nearly 59 innings of work. He'll compete for a bullpen spot in spring training.
Minnesota general manager Terry Ryan said minor-league pitcher Aaron Thompson is facing a 50-game suspension for violating baseballs drug policy. No penalty has been announced by the commissioners office involving the 25-year-old left-hander, who is not on the Twins 40-man major league roster. Thompson still has time to appeal. Ryan said Saturday that the suspension involved recreational drug use.
