Reds' Brandon Allen: Designated for assignment
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Allen was designated for assignment by the Reds on Sunday.

Allen had not yet recorded an at-bat for Cincinnati this season, but was deemed expendable when the Reds ultimately needed to add Sunday's starter, Tim Melville, to the 40-man roster. Allen can now choose to accept his position in the minors, or elect free agency.

Reds' Brandon Allen: Contract selected Friday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Allen had his contract selected by the Reds on Friday.

The Reds optioned pitcher Robert Stephenson following his start against the Phillies on Thursday, leaving an open spot on the roster. Allen, a 30-year-old first baseman, will now join the Reds' big league roster. Still, Allen figures to serve primarily as a depth option at first base and could be used as a pinch-hitter as Joey Votto is undoubtedly the Reds' primary option at first base.

Reds' Brandon Allen: Sent to the Reds minor league camp
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Allen was one of four Reds sent down to their minor league camp Tuesday.

Allen didn't have much of a chance to make the Reds, as they don't really need a backup first baseman. He'll be there as Triple-A depth.

Reds' Brandon Allen: Minor league deal with Reds
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Allen signed a minor league contract with the Reds on Tuesday that includes an invite to spring training.

While Allen has done some damage in parts of seven seasons at Triple-A, posting an .874 OPS and 109 homers, he's never played more than 52 games in any of his four major-league seasons. His last major-league appearance came in 2012, and he will likely serve merely as an organizational depth piece for the Reds if he sticks around beyond spring training.
