Jason Marquis: Throws three scoreless in WBC debut
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Marquis started Team Israel's World Baseball Classic opener against South Korea on Monday, allowing two hits and striking out three over three scoreless innings.

Marquis is still currently a free agent, but that could change if he continues to pitch effectively in the WBC. Although he was able to cruise against Team South Korea, he'll likely need to show that he can have a similar amount of success against lineups with more major league talent in order to really catch teams' attention. Now 38 years old, Marquis most recently appeared in the big leagues in 2015 with Reds, when he posted a 6.46 ERA over nine starts.

by Michael Hurcomb | CBS Sports Staff

Reds starting pitcher Jason Marquis is being reassigned to the bullpen, manager Bryan Price said Friday.

The veteran right-hander won a spot in the rotation this spring, but he has struggled through the first two months. Marquis is winless in his last four starts, and he is 3-4 with a 6.46 ERA in nine starts this season.

Then in the second, Marquis gave up another RBI single with runners on second and third to DJ LeMahieu, plating two runs. Marquis then allowed a solo home run to Nolan Arenado in the fourth.

Reds SP Jason Marquis in jeopardy of losing rotation spot
by Michael Hurcomb | CBS Sports Staff

Reds starting pitcher Jason Marquis' spot in the rotation appears to be on shaky ground following a third straight loss Wednesday at Kansas City, which dropped him to 3-4 with a 6.91 ERA through eight starts.

"Those are tough questions when you are struggling, when you've lost five in a row and during those five games you've had some really poor pitching performances from our starting pitchers," manager Bryan Price said, per "The question is a reasonable question. It isn't insensitive or ill-timed.

"What Jason provides us is important. But it is important also that he performs the way I know he can and the way he did early in the year. We always have to try and put the best team on the field. When he's throwing the way he's capable of throwing, he can be a part of a real good starting rotation."

Reds P Jason Marquis allows six runs in Friday's loss
by Sean D'Oliveira | CBS Sports Staff

Reds pitcher Jason Marquis surrendered six runs on seven hits over three innings during Friday's 10-2 loss to the Giants.

"I'm just not very good right now," Marquis said, per "I'm not able to make consistent pitches like I want. Obviously, they're squaring balls up a little better than I hoped. Whether it's bad location or not, as much life on the ball I would like, I've got to figure out something here quick because it's not fun."

His troubles began in the first inning when he gave up a three-run home run to Brandon Belt. He ran into more trouble when Buster Posey hit a two-run home run in the third. Marquis allowed another run on a single by Casey McGehee.

Marquis struck out four batters and walked two during the outing. Marquis has allowed 21 runs over his last three starts and his ERA now stands at 6.63. His next expected start is scheduled for Wednesday at Kansas City.

Reds RHP Jason Marquis pitches poorly in loss to White Sox
by Marty Gitlin |

The encouraging spring training that landed veteran starter Jason Marquis a spot in the Reds rotation certainly seems like a distant memory now.

He pushed that memory farther back Saturday night against the host White Sox. Marquis gave up five runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings with one walk and no strikeouts.

Marquis spent far more time than he would have liked watching balls fly over the fence. He allowed a home run to Alexei Ramirez in the second and blasts by Avisail Garcia and Gordon Beckham in the sixth. He was out of the game three batters later.

The right-hander had won his previous three starts, but performed poorly in two of them. He has now surrendered 19 runs in his 29 innings pitched. He will seek to reverse his fortunes against San Francisco next weekend.

Reds pitcher Jason Marquis tosses eight innings in win Monday
by Brandon Wise |

Reds pitcher Jason Marquis allowed two runs on seven hits in eight innings of work in Cincinnati's 9-6 win over the Brewers Monday.

Marquis allowed Martin Maldonado to reach on a walk in the third. He was then sacrificed to second base before Jean Segura singled him home.

"We didn't do anything off Marquis. He threw the ball well," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "We didn't square up many balls against him. We didn't start off well against him in his last outing, either. He kept the ball down. He had good movement. He threw a nice sinker. He knows how to change speeds."

Then in the sixth, Marquis allowed a double to Gerardo Parra, who was then singled home by Adam Lind for Milwaukee's second run.

"My stuff was effectively wild today," Marquis said. "It helped to get some runs on the board early."

Marquis, now 2-1, lowered his ERA to 5.48 on the year and picked up three strikeouts in the appearance. He will look to keep rolling Saturday against the Braves.

Reds' Jason Marquis escapes rough outing with win No. 1
by Igor Mello |

Reds pitcher Jason Marquis was touched up for five earned runs on nine hits, but received enough run support to come away with the win Tuesday night against the Brewers in Milwaukee.

The right-hander surrendered a two-run home run to Martin Maldonado, a run-scoring double to Elian Herrera and a run-scoring single to Ryan Braun all in the third inning. He struck out eight and did not issue a walk in five innings of a 16-10 victory. Of his 73 pitches, 49 were strikes.

Marquis (1-1) has allowed 12 earned runs through 15 innings of work in his first three starts. He will look to climb over .500 at home Saturday against Chicago. He allowed five runs -- four earned -- over four innings pitched against Chicago on April 15.

Brewers' Braun has favorable history against Reds' Marquis
by Michael Hurcomb | CBS Sports Staff

Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun finally connected for his first home run of the season Monday against the Reds. Still, despite the home run, Braun has gotten off to a slow start in 2015.

Although, he might be able to keep the momentum of Monday's performance going Tuesday.

On the hill for Cincinnati will be veteran right-hander Jason Marquis. Braun has fared pretty well against Marquis in his career. He is batting .520 (13 for 25) with one home run, five doubles, six RBI, three walks and three strikeouts against Marquis.

Chris Dominguez earns spot on Opening Day roster
by R.J. White |

Reds infielder Chris Dominguez was informed Wednesday that he has made the team's 25-man roster for Opening Day, reports.

"Certainly the offense stood out with the power and the extra-base hits," manager Bryan Price said. "His defense in the last six weeks has really greatly improved, particularly in the infield. And he brings energy into everything he does, from the drills outside to a pinch-hit at-bat to coming in the last three innings of a spring training game."

Dominguez hit .316/.322/.596 with three home runs and 14 RBI in 57 spring at-bats. The versatile bench player saw at least 15 appearances each at first base, third base and shortstop as well as in left field and right field with Triple-A Fresno last season.

Dominguez joins outfielder Brennan Boesch and pitchers Jason Marquis and Kevin Gregg as nonroster invitees to earn spots on the Opening Day roster.

Reds pitcher Jason Marquis continues to make case for pitching staff
by Brandon Wise |

Reds pitcher Jason Marquis gave up three earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work Sunday. Marquis, who also added three strikeouts, now has a 3-1 record with a 3.46 ERA in six starts.

"He's really taken advantage of his opportunity," manager Bryan Price said. "I'm pleased with the way he's thrown the ball. When he’s been down in the zone with that sinker and slider and split combination, he's been pretty effective. He had another pretty good start today."

Marquis used 96 pitches to get through his outing.

"After the last outing, I felt pretty good with going deep into games," Marquis said. "I responded really well after the last start. Today coming in, I didn't know what my pitch limit was but I felt good enough to treat it like a regular season game. I was glad I was able to get that far."

Reds' Marquis happy with way he is throwing baseball post-surgery
by Michael Hurcomb | CBS Sports Staff

Reds starting pitcher Jason Marquis hasn't made a start in the majors since 2013 while working his way back from Tommy John surgery. But the 36-year-old pitcher has had a career resurgence this spring and is on track to open the season in the Reds' rotation.

"The ball is coming out of my hand in a way it hasn't the last five years," Marquis said, per "I've gotten some velocity back, but that's not the big thing. There's just more life on the ball.

"I'm throwing the ball instead of pushing it, guiding it. I think maybe I developed bad habits over those years to protect the elbow so I can pitch. More than anything, that's what I'm happiest with."

Marquis is 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA in five spring starts.
