Cubs' Chris Coghlan: Minors pact with Cubs
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan signed a minor-league deal with the Cubs on Thursday, The Athletic's Patrick Mooney reports.

He will be in extended spring training to start the season, but should soon join the Iowa Cubs. Coghlan was recently released by the Blue Jays and will have a hard time earning playing time at the big-league level this season.

Chris Coghlan: Released by Blue Jays
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan (wrist) was released by the Blue Jays on Tuesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Coghlan was designated for assignment over the weekend, and rather than accepting his assignment to the minors after clearing waivers, the 32-year-old elected to test free agency. He should be able to catch on elsewhere given his previous big-league experience, though he may need to get over the wrist injury that has kept him sidelined since June before he inks a deal.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Removed from 40-man roster
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan (wrist) was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Saturday, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.

The Blue Jays needed to clear room on the 40-man roster for Saturday's starter Chris Rowley, as well as backup catcher Mike Ohlman, so Coghlan was the resulting roster casualty. The 32-year-old hasn't played since June while nursing a left wrist contusion, and now appears bound for the minors when he returns from the DL, barring the possibility he isn't claimed off waivers. Coghlan, playing in his first year with Toronto, owns a lowly .200/.299/.267 slash line over just 75 at-bats this year.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Begins rehab assignment
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan (wrist) went 1-for-3 with an RBI in his first rehab appearance Monday at High-A Dunedin, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.

The veteran utility man has been on the shelf since mid-June after suffering a wrist contusion. Coghlan slashed just .200/.299/.267 over 36 games prior to the injury, and whether he jumps back aboard the 25-man roster when fully healthy remains in question.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Ticketed for DL with wrist issue
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday with a left wrist contusion, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.

It's unclear when this issue cropped up, but it may go to explain why he was absent from the past five contests. The severity of the injury is unknown at this time, making a timetable for his return murky. Steve Pearce returned from his own DL stint in a corresponding move.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Returns to lineup
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan is back in the lineup Wednesday, batting seventh and playing left field.

The veteran outfielder had missed the past couple games with back spasms but appears ready to return after some rest. Serving in a reserve utility role, Coghlan is slashing .231/.318/.333 over 39 at-bats this month and takes over for the resting Kevin Pillar on Wednesday.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Remains out Tuesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan (back) is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Reds, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Coghlan was scratched from Monday's lineup due to a bout of back spasms, and it seems the ailment is still bugging him. Ezequiel Carrera will continue to man left field in his stead.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Injury not considered serious
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Manager John Gibbons said Coghlan's "back locked up on him during batting practice," but did not believe the injury was very serious, MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm reports.

The 32-year-old has been splitting time with Ezequiel Carrera in left field while Steve Pearce remains sidelined with a calf injury. Coghlan is hitting .224/.312/.299 over 31 games this season. He's day-to-day for now.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Misses Monday's game with back spasms
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan sat out of Monday's game due to back spasms, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports.

The injury that forced the Jays to scratch Coghlan on Monday was initially undisclosed. Consider him day-to-day.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Scratched for unknown reason
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan was scratched from Monday's lineup against the Reds for an undisclosed reason, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.

Ezequiel Carrera will replace him in left field, batting ninth. Coghlan's status will be updated once the Blue Jays provide a reason for his absence from the lineup.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Gets second straight start in left field
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan will start in left field and bat ninth Monday against the Reds, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet reports.

It's the second straight starting nod in left field for Coghlan, who recorded a base hit across three at-bats Sunday against the Rangers. Coghlan is only hitting .224/.312/.299 on the season, but with Ezequiel Carrera struggling at the plate lately, manager John Gibbons could experiment with Coghlan in an everyday role to evaluate whether he can provide more of a spark at the bottom of the lineup.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Out of Sunday's lineup
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan is not in the lineup Sunday against the Rays, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Coghlan has started three of the last five games at the hot corner, but Sunday's absence will be the second game in a row the 31-year-old is out of the lineup. Manager John Gibbons will once again use Darwin Barney at third base for the afternoon matchup.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Sitting out Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan is out of the lineup Sunday against the Rays, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.

Though Coghlan looks like he'll see the larger portion of a platoon at third base with Darwin Barney for as long as Josh Donaldson (calf) remains on the disabled list, he'll give way to Barney on Sunday, even with a righty starting for the Rays in Chris Archer. With six hits in 28 at-bats this season, Coghlan will have to provide a little more offense to warrant a pickup outside of AL-only and very deep mixed leagues.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Starting at third base Thursday in Game 1
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan is in the lineup for Game 1 of the Blue Jays' Thursday doubleheader with the Cardinals, batting sixth and playing third base, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.

Coghlan's had some success over his career against Cardinals' starter Carlos Martinez. The 31-year-old is 3-for-13 with a double, pair of RBI and four walks (.412 OBP) against the right-hander. Coghlan will likely head to the bench in favor of Darwin Barney -- or, possibly Russell Martin -- for Game 2 of the doubleheader.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Makes starting lineup Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan is batting seventh and playing third base for Saturday's game against the Orioles.

Coghlan will make his Blue Jays debut despite going 5-for-23 over seven games with Triple-A Buffalo to begin the year. Nonetheless, with Josh Donaldson (calf) on the DL, it appears the 31-year-old journeyman will be in line for multiple starts.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Called up to big leagues
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan was officially called up from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, Mike Wilner of the Blue Jays Radio Network reports.

As anticipated, the Blue Jays will have the veteran Coghlan return to the big leagues in order to take the roster spot of Josh Donaldson (calf). It seems like the 31-year-old will fill a reserve utility role for the time being.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: On way to join Jays
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan was called up from Triple-A Buffalo to join the Blue Jays on Friday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports.

The lefty utility bat had an opt-out clause in his contract at the end of April that he could've exercised if he didn't see the big-league roster. More importantly, however, his presence looks like it'll come in place of Josh Donaldson (calf), who's expected to be placed on the disabled list Friday. Coghlan may piece together at-bats at several positions during Donaldson's absence, though fantasy interest will chiefly come from AL-only players.

Blue Jays' Chris Coghlan: Signs minor-league contract with Blue Jays
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan signed a minor-league contract with the Blue Jays on Saturday, Toronto play-by-play announcer Mike Wilner reports.

After being released by the Phillies earlier in the week, Coghlan will latch on with the Blue Jays and start the season with their Triple-A affiliate at Buffalo. Coghlan, 31, struggled at the plate last season (.188/.290/.318), but he adds defensive versatility that makes him a plug-and-play option in the infield or the outfield for manager John Gibbons if he ultimately gets called back up to the majors.

Chris Coghlan: Let go by Phillies
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan was released by the Phillies on Tuesday.

This comes as a bit of a surprise, as Coghlan was worth over three wins (3.3 fWAR) as recently as 2015. However, he struggled mightily in 2016, and hit just .231 with a .601 OPS in 39 at-bats this spring. He will look to catch on elsewhere in a utility role.

Phillies' Chris Coghlan: Roster decision looming
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coghlan can request his release if he is not added to the Phillies' roster by Sunday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

The Phillies actually have 48 hours from Sunday to put Coghlan on the roster, presumably to give them time to make another roster move since they don't currently have an open spot on their 40-man. Coghlan could also request his immediate release Sunday to pursue another opportunity. He is competing with Brock Stassi, Daniel Nava and Jesmuel Valentin for one of two bench jobs.
