Rangers' Tyson Ross: Hits disabled list with blister issue
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ross was placed on the 10-day disabled list Monday due to a blister on his right index finger, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.

It wasn't until mid-June that Ross was cleared to make his Rangers debut following a long recovery from surgery to address thoracic outlet syndrome, and it appears safe to conclude that he hasn't been worth the wait. Over seven starts, Ross compiled a 7.52 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 27:20 K:BB in 32.1 innings. The blister issue may explain some his struggles, but with Ross' fastball velocity also down a tick from a season ago, he may not notice dramatically better results once his finger heals up. The Rangers probably won't have a good gauge for Ross' recovery timeline until later in the week, but he'll miss at least one turn in the rotation, which will likely prompt the team to go back to long reliever Austin Bibens-Dirkx as a temporary fifht starter. Catcher Brett Nicholas was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move, giving the Rangers some temporary insurance behind the plate while backup backstop Robinson Chirinos remains day-to-day with a sprained ankle.

Rangers' Tyson Ross: Can't escape fourth inning in no-decision
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ross allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits and four walks across 3.2 innings in a no-decision against the Rays on Sunday. He struck out five.

The results have been poor for Ross after a seven-start sample size, with his miserable 27:20 K:BB contributing to an ugly 7.52 ERA over 32.1 innings in that span. He needs to show signs of improvement quickly if he is to hang on to his place in the rotation, with Saturday's start against the Orioles his next chance to do so.

Rangers' Tyson Ross: Rocked in loss to Orioles
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ross (2-2) allowed nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits and three walks across 3.1 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Orioles. He struck out four.

The majority of the damage against Ross came in the first inning when each of the first six men reached base, including an RBI double from Jonathan Schoop and two-run home runs by Chris Davis and Trey Mancini. He later loaded the bases before being pulled with one out in the fourth and saw three more runs tacked on his ledger when the bullpen allowed Davis to launch a grand slam. While he was a bit unlucky on the night, Ross still delivered an uninspiring effort and has now alternated strong outings with poor ones since returning from an elbow injury roughly a month ago. The veteran now holds a 7.22 ERA across 28.2 innings and will look to bounce back Sunday against the Rays.

Rangers' Tyson Ross: Misses quality start but prevails Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ross (2-1) picked up the win Saturday, throwing 5.2 innings against the Angels while allowing one run on four hits and two walks. He struck out three.

Ross came up just short of a quality start but worked around a solo home run by Yunel Escobar for an effective outing. He looked a little bit more like the peak version of himself fantasy owners continue to chase through all his injury and control woes. Even with this positive step, however, the 30-year-old still struggled to work around the zone, throwing just 48 strikes in 94 pitches. He'll carry a 5.33 ERA with 6.4 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9 into the second half, though he could be a sneaky post-break contributor - health permitting -- in many deep mixed leagues if he can find his form.

Rangers' Tyson Ross: Struggles to throw strikes in Sunday's no-decision
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ross allowed four runs on four hits and five walks with three strikeouts over five innings in Sunday's no-decision against the White Sox.

Ross was still in line for the win despite the poor outing until Jose Leclerc turned a 5-4 lead into a 6-5 deficit in the eighth inning. The oft-injured righty once again battled control problems in this one, throwing just 54 of 97 pitches for strikes after managing 56 of 98 in his previous outing. His inability to throw strikes will make Ross tough to trust even with a Saturday home matchup against a subpar Angels lineup on tap for his next start.
