Everth Cabrera: Released by White Sox
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cabrera was released by the White Sox on Friday, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.

Cabrera, who hasn't played in the major leagues since a short stint with the Orioles in 2015, was hitting just .201/.284/.249 over 52 games with Triple-A Charlotte this season, giving the White Sox little reason to keep the veteran in their organization. He'll look to latch on elsewhere in hopes of continuing his playing career.

White Sox's Everth Cabrera: Signs minor league contract with White Sox
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cabrera signed a minor league contract with the White Sox, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.

The 30-year-old hasn't played in the majors since 2015, when he struggled to a .208/.250/.229 line in 96 at-bats with Baltimore. He led the league in stolen bases in 2012 and was an All-Star in 2013, both with the Padres, however he has yet to come close to that level of success since. Not much should be expected from the former speedster, who will likely provide middle-infield depth at the Triple-A level.

Orioles' Everth Cabrera batting ninth Monday vs. Red Sox
by R.J. White |

One day after batting leadoff for the third time this season, Orioles shortstop Everth Cabrera is making his third appearance as the team's No. 9 hitter in Monday's matchup with the Red Sox.

"He's got some pop right-handed," manager Buck Showalter said, per "He's a strong guy, a strong little guy. Short in stature. He's got more arm strength than I thought he had. That's been good to see. Legs feel good and healthy, which they haven't been in a while. If he hits .270 and is that type of threat, he's a pest down in the order or at the top. You better not forget about him."

Cabrera can serve as something of a second leadoff hitter in the ninth spot.

"You'd like to in a perfect world if you have somebody who can do it," Showalter said. "They used their left-hander a lot yesterday. They've got one down there. You're trying not to give them the ability to use one pitcher to get multiple outs out of the bullpen. Being a switch-hitter sitting there, we all know he's a little better right-handed hitter so far. He's a threat, both sides, real good bunter. What hit me in the spring when we played National League clubs was how much they honored the bunt with him, which told me he must be a pretty good bunter. He got thrown out a couple of times, (but) you could see he could steal a base."

Cabrera has hit .263 with no extra-base hits, two walks and one stolen base in 38 at-bats.
