Ryan Vogelsong: Steps away from baseball
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong will officially announce his retirement Sunday during a ceremony in San Francisco in advance of the Giants' game against the Diamondbacks, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Vogelsong hasn't pitched anywhere this season after being cut by the Twins in spring training following his failed bid to win an Opening Day roster spot. The 39-year-old didn't draw much interest elsewhere, so he'll hang up his spikes and retire as a member of the Giants, with whom he won two World Series and earned his only All-Star nod in 2011. Vogelsong retires with a career 61-75 record, 4.48 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 289 big-league appearances (179 starts).

Ryan Vogelsong: Granted release
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong asked for and was granted his release from the Twins on Tuesday, Rhett Bolinger of reports.

Vogelsong was fighting for the fifth starter role with the Twins this spring, but he was always a long shot compared to younger options and he didn't do much to help his cause, posting a 7.27 ERA across 8.2 innings (five games). The 39-year-old will now look to get a shot with another team before camp ends.

Twins' Ryan Vogelsong: Struggles in Saturday's spring start
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong gave up two runs over three innings in Saturday's spring training loss to Boston. He has a 7.27 ERA with a 5:5 K:BB in 8.2 innings this spring. He reached just 89 mph with his fastball during Saturday's outing, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Vogelsong is in the mix for the fifth starter competition that's become more wide open with Trevor May headed for Tommy John surgery. He hasn't shown much this spring, although he says his velocity will increase later in spring as he builds his strength. It seems unlikely he'll win a spot on the 25-man roster, but it's possible the Twins could decide to begin the season with Vogelsong as the fifth starter and serve in a swingman role with off days until younger players are ready in the minors.

Twins' Ryan Vogelsong: Still being considered for rotation spot
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Manager Paul Molitor insists Vogelsong is only a candidate for a rotation spot and will not compete for a bullpen role, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

The veteran was signed as a non-roster invitee over the winter. Although Vogelsong has pitched few innings this spring, the Twins quelled any thoughts of him moving to relief by simply stating that he's progressing at a veteran's pace this spring. Minnesota's rotation is anything but set in stone as of now, yet there are a lot of arms clamoring for the last couple spots, so Vogelsong seems to be facing an uphill climb to garnering a major league roster spot.

Twins' Ryan Vogelsong: Signs minor league contract with Minnesota
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong signed a minor league contract with Minnesota that includes an invitation to spring training, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

After missing two and a half months last season after he was hit in the face by a batted ball, Vogelsong had a 4.81 ERA and 5.06 FIP. At age 39, he appears to be a poor fit for the rebuilding Twins. He'll compete for a rotation spot, but it may end up being an audition to find work with another team.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Allows one run over five innings in no-decision
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong settled for a no-decision after allowing one run on five hits and three walks in five innings against the Cardinals on Sunday. He struck out one.

Vogelsong was in line for the win when he left the game, but Pittsburgh's bullpen promptly allowed three runs in the sixth, denying him a chance at his fourth victory. The outing was a rare highlight in an otherwise disappointing campaign for the 39-year-old, who posted a 4.81 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 82.1 innings. It's been a few seasons since he was fantasy-relevant, and given his age it's possible he retires during the offseason.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Struggles with command in loss to Cubs
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong (3-7) lasted five innings, allowing four runs, four hits and five walks while striking out five Cubs in Tuesday's loss.

Saying he struggled with his command would be an understatement, as Vogelsong managed to throw just half of his 101 pitches for strikes. His five walks were a season high, and the most free passes Vogelsong has issued since June of last year. If the Pirates were still in contention, it's unlikely the 39-year-old veteran would have even been allowed to stick it out for five full innings. Vogelsong is slated to start the season finale in St. Louis on Sunday.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Throws four innings, allows two runs in loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong (3-6) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks Thursday while striking out seven.

Vogelsong was able to bring the situation under control after giving up a walk, a stolen base and a home run to Milwaukee's top two batters in the first inning. Unfortunately, he didn't get any recompense from his offense and was lifted for a pinch hitter in the fifth after throwing just 70 pitches. His ERA on the season now stands at 4.85, which is above his career 4.48 mark. But on the bright side, this was Vogelsong's first outing since August 26th in which he didn't get shelled for four or more runs.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Lasts just 4.2 innings against Reds
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings against the Reds on Friday. He did not factor into the decision.

The 39-year-old righty still has some gas left in the tank, but just how much is the real question. He is now 3-5 on the year with a 4.87 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 68.1 innings. Most concerning for fantasy owners is that he's allowed five or more runs in each of his last four starts.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Roughed up by Reds on Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong (3-5) surrendered six runs on seven hits and three walks over four innings in Sunday's loss to the Reds.

He also failed to strike out a batter and managed to throw just six first-pitch strikes to 22 batters faced. Vogelsong has now allowed 16 runs in 13 innings over his last three starts. So while the schedule has him down for a rematch with the Reds in Cincinnati on Friday, the Pirates may well decide to go in another direction for that start as they try to keep their fading wild-card hopes alive.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Struggles again Tuesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong struggled again Tuesday, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two in just four innings against the Cardinals.

There's no shame in getting knocked around by a tough Cardinals lineup, but this is becoming a pattern for Vogelsong. The 39-year-old has shown his age in his last five starts, failing to eclipse six innings on any occasion while allowing 19 runs in 26 frames over that span. He'll look to get back on track Sunday against the Reds in what will be his fourth straight start against an NL Central foe.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Takes loss despite quality start Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong (2-3) allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks over six innings while striking out five in Sunday's loss to the Marlins.

He's done yeoman's work filling out the back of the Pirates' rotation in August, posting a 2.28 ERA and 17:7 K:BB in 23.2 innings over four starts, although Vogelsong's ERA is a little deceptive, considering he's given up four unearned runs in that stretch. He'll next take the mound Friday in Milwaukee.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Gives up four runs in win over Giants
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong (2-2) allowed four runs on nine hits and three walks with a strikeout over 5.2 innings in a win Monday against the Giants.

Vogelsong failed to record a quality start for the first time in three turns since he rejoined the rotation August 4. He was undone by a pair of solo home runs and couldn't miss bats, as he drew just one swinging strike in 94 pitches. Vogelsong gave up 17 home runs in 135 innings (1.1 HR/9) as he allowed a 4.67 ERA in 2015, and his struggles in that department are still there (five HR in 39.1 innings, 1.1 HR/9). He owns a solid 3.20 ERA, but he'll have to keep the ball in the yard if he wants to maintain such a low mark.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Pitches well but takes loss against Padres
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong (1-2) pitched extremely well but took the loss Wednesday against the Padres. He allowed two unearned runs on three hits, struck out five and walked one in the defeat.

The Pirates didn't give Vogelsong any run support, as they recorded a season-low two hits, and two errors in the second inning led to the two runs he allowed. Vogelsong has given up one earned run in 12 frames since returning from the disabled list, but he hasn't won either game because the Pirates have supplied him two runs combined in those two outings. Vogelsong now has a 2.67 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 27 strikeouts in 33.2 innings over four starts and 10 relief appearances this season. After two great outings, he should remain in the starting rotation.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Delivers six sharp innings in return
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong, coming back from a layoff of more than two months after being hit in the face by a pitch, held the Braves to a single run on three hits and a walk while striking out six over six strong innings Thursday.

He didn't receive a decision thanks to opposing starter Tyrell Jenkins matching him inning for inning, ruining a sparkling return for Vogelsong after a scary injury that required him to get eye surgery. The 39-year-old righty had the bad luck to get drilled in the face in his very first start of the year after coming out of the bullpen to start the season, but a rotation spot was still waiting for him upon his return. Now in the twilight of his career, he isn't an exciting fantasy starter even on his best days, but Vogelsong has it in him to turn out the occasional strong outing like this one. Having friendly matchups certainly helps.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Reinstated from 60-day DL Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong was recalled to start Thursday's game against Atlanta.

Vogelsong made four rehab starts as he returned from a neck injury that sidelined him since May. He pitched to a 2.86 ERA over 22 combined innings between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis. The 39-year-old is now set to toe the hill Thursday as he faces off against Tyrell Jenkins and the Braves. In order to make room on the depth chart, Max Moroff was optioned to Triple-A.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Scheduled to start Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong (neck) will start for the Pirates on Thursday against the Braves, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports.

It will be the first Major League appearance since May 23 for Vogelsong, who has been recovering from an eye procedure that was performed after he was hit in the head with a pitch. He'll get the starting nod Thursday and should be a short-term rotation option, but he could be slated for long relief in the long run, especially if the 52-50 Pirates decide to take a closer look at their young arms down the stretch.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Pitches well Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong (neck) hurled seven innings of two-run ball Wednesday for Triple-A Indianapolis and could become a candidate for Pittsburgh's rotation in the coming week.

Depending upon what roster moves transpire at the trade deadline, Vogelsong will either return to the rotation or bullpen. The 39-year-old righty would be looked upon as an innings eater if he came back as a starter. He made just two starts in 12 appearances before suffering a serious eye injury while batting in May.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Will make rehab start Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong (neck) will make a rehab start for Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, Adam Berry of reports.

The plan is for Vogelsong to pitch seven innings or throw 90-95 pitches, whichever comes first. By the looks of it, the Pirates plan to slot Vogelsong into the rotation when he is activated from the disabled list. Vogelsong has pitched in 12 games for the Pirates this season, starting just two of them.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Will play catch Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vogelsong (eye) will play catch today after being pulled from Wednesday's rehab outing, Stephen J. Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Vogelsong left Wednesday's Triple-A rehab outing after four innings because of neck soreness, completely unrelated to the eye injury that's kept him out of action since May. He was expected to come off the DL on Saturday, but because of his neck issue, he'll be sidelined a few more days as he works out the kinks. If all goes well when he plays catch, he'll likely not require another rehab outing and could be activated early next week.
