Northcraft was optioned to San Diego's alternate training site Monday.
Northcraft appeared in four contests for the Padres since being called up, allowing two runs on four hits and six walks over six innings of relief work. Nabil Crismatt was recalled in a corresponding move.
Northcraft pitched two scoreless innings in relief against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out a pair.
The right-hander came on in the seventh inning and kept Los Angeles in check for two frames, throwing 17 of 26 pitches for strikes and allowing only two baserunners. He was making his first major-league appearance following a long stint in the minors that began in 2010. Northcraft has been a starter through most of his professional career but was successful in converting to a relief role in 2019, posting a 1.87 ERA over 33.2 innings with the Miami organization. He could carve out a role in the Padres' bullpen moving forward, though he's unlikely to work up to high-leverage situations.
Northcraft's contract was selected by the Padres on Friday.
Northcraft hasn't yet appeared in a major-league game, but he served as a non-roster invitee this spring. During that time, he made four relief appearances and allowed one hit and two walks while striking out four in 3.1 scoreless innings. Northcraft will now be available to make his major-league debut but is unlikely to pitch in high-leverage situations.
Northcraft is part of the Marlins' 60-man player pool, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
The 30-year-old righty has never reached the majors, but he logged a 1.87 ERA and 35:13 K:BB in 33.2 innings of relief at Triple-A last year with the Mariners, so he should be capable of handling low-leverage work if injuries force the Marlins' hand.
Northcraft signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Northcraft made his return to affiliated baseball in 2019, and he recorded a 1.85 ERA with a 0.90 WHIP over 12 appearances between the Double-A and Triple-A levels. The right-hander hasn't appeared in the majors since his career began in 2010, but he could enter the conversation for a role in the Marlins' bullpen in 2020 if he can increase his workload and remain effective.
Northcraft signed a minor-league deal with the Mariners, Brandon Warne of ZoneCoverage.com reports.
Northcraft has been out of affiliated baseball since 2016. The 28-year-old has thus far topped out at the Triple-A level, recording a 5.81 ERA in 155 innings.
