Reds' Derek Dietrich: Absent from 60-man pool
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich isn't included on the Reds' initial 60-man roster pool.

The team named only 57 players Sunday, and it remains unclear why Dietrich wasn't included among them. The 30-year-old had a .187/.328/.462 slash line with 19 home runs in 305 plate appearances last year and re-signed with the Reds as a non-roster invitee in February, but his path to playing time in 2020 always appeared more complicated given the offseason acquisitions of Mike Moustakas and Shogo Akiyama. According to Mark Sheldon of, GM Nick Krall said Dietrich could still be added to the player pool at some point, but for now the team is prioritizing roster flexibility.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Good to go Monday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich (wrist) will start at second base and bat seventh in Monday's Cactus League game against the Dodgers.

After being removed from Saturday's game against the Padres when he was struck by a pitch on the right wrist, Dietrich was able to avoid any structural damage and only needed one day off to overcome the injury. Now that he's back in action, the non-roster invitee will continue to fight for a spot on the Reds' Opening Day bench.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Leaves after HBP
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich left Saturday's spring training game against the Padres after getting hit by a pitch on the right wrist, Mark Sheldon of reports.

Getting plunked is a regular occurrence for Dietrich. Despite getting only 305 plate appearances in 2019, he got hit a whopping 25 times.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Starting spring opener
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich (shoulder) will bat sixth and play second base in Sunday's spring opener against the White Sox, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.

Dietrich battled shoulder issues throughout last season, eventually undergoing arthroscopic surgery in September. He's ready to go now for the start of spring action, but he'll have plenty to prove after hitting an awful .099/.283/.207 over the last 57 games of last season. He's in camp as a non-roster invitee but should have a shot to win a bench spot with a strong spring.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Re-signs with Reds
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich (shoulder) returned to the Reds as a non-roster invitee Wednesday.

Dietrich's 2019 campaign was a tale of two halfs. He hit a remarkable .269/.373/.700 in his first 56 games but battled injuries en route to a .099/.283/.207 line over his final 57 contests. The Reds made several upgrades to their offense this offseason, but Dietrich's positional versatility could still help secure him a bench role if he looks healthy and effective this spring.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Outrighted to Triple-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich (shoulder) was outrighted to Triple-A Louisville after clearing waivers Monday.

Dietrich clearing waivers would have been hard to imagine early in the season, as he hit .269/.373/.700 through his first 56 games. He hit an anemic .099/.283/.207 while battling injuries the rest of the way, though, so he'll be removed from the Reds' 40-man roster and will have to fight for a roster spot in camp.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Undergoes shoulder cleanup surgery
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich underwent arthroscopic surgery to clean up his left shoulder Friday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The procedure ends Dietrich's season a few days early but isn't expected to affect his offseason. He'll wrap up his first season in Cincinnati with a career-high 19 homers in just 305 plate appearances, though that came with a startlingly low .187 batting average. He can probably blame some of that on his balky shoulder, though. He was hitting .269/.373/.700 through June 2 but proceeded to hit just .099/.283/.207 the rest of the way.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Not in Friday's lineup
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich (shoulder) is not starting Friday against the Pirates.

Dietrich hasn't played since leaving Tuesday's game against the Brewers with a left shoulder injury, an issue he's dealt with on and off all season. He likely would have sat even if healthy Friday, though, with lefty Steven Brault on the mound for Pittsburgh.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Reinjures left shoulder
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich left Tuesday's game against the Brewers after aggravating his left shoulder injury, Mark Sheldon of reports. "He's been dealing with a shoulder [injury] off and on all year," manager David Bell said. "It's just kind of some wear and tear in the shoulder. We're going to try to figure out what the best plan is for the rest of the year. He was taken out for that."

This is the same injury that put Dietrich on the IL in August. It might keep him out of this weekend's final series of the season against the Pirates.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Reprises bench role
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich is out of the lineup for the first game of Sunday's doubleheader with the Cardinals.

Dietrich drew four consecutive starts at first base between Aug. 23 and 26, but his time in the everyday lineup is over following Joey Votto's recent return from the injured list. During the final month of the season, the slumping Dietrich probably won't be in line for much more than the occasional start in addition to pinch-hitting work versus right-handers.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Third straight start at first base
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich will start at first base and bat sixth Sunday against the Pirates, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Dietrich has now manned first base in each of his first three games back from a nearly three-week stay on the injured list. Though Dietrich has gone hitless in his first two contests back in action and is slashing just .125/.311/.250 since the beginning of July, he should be in line for steady action against right-handed pitching until the Reds return Joey Votto (back) from the injury list.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Activated from IL
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday. He is starting at first base and batting seventh against the Pirates.

He takes the roster spot of Jesse Winker (neck), who was placed on the 10-day injured list. Dietrich has been out since Aug. 4. He had a great start to the season, but is hitting just .141/.331/.273 with two home runs in 99 at-bats since June 1. He should assume a part-time role going forward.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Rehab assignment begins next week
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment Monday with Triple-A Louisville, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

He has been out since Aug. 4 and may not require more than a few rehab games before he is ready to rejoin the big-league club. Josh VanMeter and Aristides Aquino have both emerged as quality options while Dietrich has been out, so it is unclear whether a regular role will be waiting for him once he is activated.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Takes batting practice
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich (shoulder) took batting practice on the field prior to Saturday's game, Mark Sheldon of reports.

This is a significant development for Dietrich, who has been on the injured list since Aug. 5 with left shoulder inflammation. If he responds well overnight, the Reds may start working out the logistics for a minor-league rehab assignment. Dietrich is expected to return to a bench role once healthy.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Sidelined with balky shoulder
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with left shoulder inflammation.

It's unclear when the injury cropped up, but it will force Dietrich to miss at least 10 days. Brian O'Grady was promoted from Triple-A Louisville to take Dietrich's place on the roster.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: First start since July 17
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich will start at second base and bat sixth Sunday against the Braves.

He'll crack the lineup for the first time since July 17, ending a stretch of 16 consecutive games on the bench. Dietrich was plagued by a knee injury early during that streak of absences, but his lack of usage in more recent days has been due in part to the emergence of Josh VanMeter. Though the Reds recently opened up two spots in the everyday lineup by trading away Yasiel Puig and Scooter Gennett, VanMeter, Aristides Aquino, Jose Peraza and Phillip Ervin all look like better bets than Dietrich to notice enhanced roles.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Three pinch-hit strikeouts
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich (knee) had three plate appearances coming off the bench in the Reds' three-game series against the Pirates, striking out all three times. He sat out Wednesday's win entirely.

With the Reds trading away Scooter Gennett and Yasiel Puig over the last two days, there's now some room for Dietrich to play over the last two months, presuming that his knee is fully healed. The Reds will also want to see more from Josh VanMeter, Philip Ervin and Jose Peraza down the stretch, so don't assume that Dietrich will be an everyday starter.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Limited to bench role again
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich (knee) isn't in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.

Dietrich hasn't drawn any starts since July 17 but has picked up seven at-bats while being used in seven games off the bench over the past week and a half. That usage suggests the Reds don't view his knee issue as a major concern, but he'll nonetheless retain the day-to-day designation until he re-enters the starting nine.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Riding bench Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich (knee) is out of the lineup Saturday against the Rockies.

Dietrich is on the bench once again as he deals with a knee injury that has led to inconsistent playing time since it occurred July 17. It wouldn't be surprising to see him come off the bench Saturday once again as he has in seven of the eight games since the injury.

Reds' Derek Dietrich: Out of Friday's lineup
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dietrich (knee) is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Rockies.

Dietrich has been dealing with a knee issue for over a week and hasn't made a start since July 17. The 30-year-old has appeared off the bench in six of seven games since his last start, so the injury doesn't appear to be a major concern.
