  • Luis Sardinas: Waived by Washington

The Nationals released Sardinas on Monday, Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic reports. Sardinas was heading into his second season with the Nationals after splitting time between Triple-A Fresno and Double-A Harrisburg in 2019 and slashing .233/.299/.300 over 258 plate appearances. The 27-year-old last appeared in the big leagues in 2018, taking the field in eight games with the Orioles.

  • Nationals' Luis Sardinas: Reaches minor-league deal

Sardinas signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals on Saturday, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports. Sardinas has received 500 major-league plate appearances across five seasons but has very little to show for it, hitting just .224/.274/.292. He's played all four infield positions plus left field, giving him multiple routes to the majors, but he'll likely only get called up in an emergency.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Outrighted to Triple-A from DL

Sardinas (ankle) was activated off the 60-day disabled list and outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk after clearing waivers. Sardinas missed the first three months of the season with back and ankle injuries, and the Orioles opted not to bring him back onto the 40-man roster as he comes off the 60-day disabled list. The 25-year-old played four rehab games with Norfolk and will remain there for the foreseeable future.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Shifts to 60-day DL

Sardinas (ankle) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Monday. Sardinas has already been out for 57 days, so the move likely won't delay his return, as he still doesn't have a clear timetable. He was removed from the 40-man roster in order to make room for Tim Beckham (groin) to be activated from the 60-day disabled list.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Remains on DL with ankle injury

Sardinas (back) sustained an ankle injury during his rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. Sardinas, who has been on the disabled list since the end of April with the back injury, began his rehab stint last week only to suffer the ankle injury. The severity of the ankle issue and whether the back injury still a problem remains unclear, and the 25-year-old currently has no timetable for his return.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Rehabbing at Triple-A

Sardinas (back) has made two rehab appearances at Triple-A Norfolk, going 0-for-6 at the dish during those contests. The infielder has been sidelined since late April with a sore back, so he may need to put in a few more games in the minors before the Orioles sign off on his return from the disabled list. Sardinas is expected to serve as a utility man for Baltimore once activated.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Nearing game action at extended spring

Sardinas (back) is close to playing in games at extended spring training, Rich Dubroff of PressBoxonline.com reports. Sardinas has been on the shelf since the end of April with a back injury, but he's apparently shown improvement and is nearing a return to game action. It's unclear if Sardinas will require a minor-league rehab assignment before rejoining the Orioles, leaving his return date up in the air. With Jonathan Schoop healthy and back in action, Sardinas isn't even guaranteed to stick with the big cub once he's activated.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Lands on DL

Sardinas (back) was placed on the disabled list Sunday, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. At this point in time, the severity of Sardinas' injury is unknown, although additional information should become available soon. Prior to getting hurt, Sardinas had been serving as an infield reserve option for the Orioles, as Jace Peterson has been the team's primary option at second base with Jonathan Schoop (oblique) on the disabled list.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Dealing with sore lower back

Sardinas is dealing with a sore lower back and isn't certain to be available off the bench Sunday against the Tigers, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. Sardinas, who had been serving as the primary replacement at second base for Jonathan Schoop (oblique) during a spell earlier this month, had ceded those duties to waiver pickup Jace Peterson before the injury surfaced. The Orioles plan to evaluate Sardinas over the next day or two before determining if he'll need to join Schoop on the 10-day disabled list.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Slides down depth chart

Sardinas is out of the lineup Sunday against the Tigers, Jon Meoli of The Baltimore Sun reports. Since the Orioles claimed Jace Peterson off waivers from the Yankees on Tuesday, Sardinas has seen his everyday role at second base evaporate. Considering Sardinas has opened up his stint with the Orioles with a 2-for-18 showing at the plate, it shouldn't come as a surprise that manager Buck Showalter quickly pulled the plug on deploying the 24-year-old in a starting role. Sardinas will find himself on the bench for the fifth straight game Sunday.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Serving as primary second baseman

Sardinas will start at second base and bat ninth Sunday against the Indians, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. Since Jonathan Schoop was shut down April 14 with a Grade 1 oblique strain, Sardinas has stepped in as the Orioles' primary second baseman. He'll pick up his fifth start at the keystone in six games, and until Schoop returns, Sardinas shouldn't face any immediate competition for the everyday role after Engelb Vielma was demoted to Triple-A Norfolk earlier this weekend. Despite his steady playing time, Sardinas will need to do much better than the .143 batting average he has supplied for the Orioles thus far before gaining traction in most fantasy settings.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Contract selected from Triple-A

Sardinas had his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday. He is starting at second base and hitting eighth against the Tigers. With Jonathan Schoop (oblique) on the disabled list, Sardinas will join the big club to offer some additional infield depth. The Orioles will waste no time inserting the soon-to-be 25-year-old into the lineup, and he could continue to see some playing time at the keystone while Schoop is out if he's able to hold his own. His .229/.278/.293 career triple-slash across parts of four major-league seasons suggests he may be more likely to settle into a reserve role during his time with the Orioles.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Returns to minors

The Orioles reassigned Sardinas to minor-league camp Sunday, Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com reports. Sardinas earned an invitation to spring training to complete for for the role of utility infielder, which was won by Danny Valencia. The 24-year-old has struggled in the majors with a career .229/.278/.293 slash line in 480 plate appearances and should return to Triple-A Norfolk to start the season.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Invited to spring training

Sardinas was invited to Orioles spring training, Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com reports. It had been expected that Sardinas would compete for a utility role in the upcoming season, so his invitation to spring training doesn't come as much of a surprise. Sardinas has experience in the outfield as well as first base, second base, third base and shortstop. However, he hasn't been very productive at the plate. Over 174 games in the Show, Sardinas has hit .229/.278/.293.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Candidate for utility role

Manager Buck Showalter said Sardinas is a candidate to serve a utility role next season, Rich Dubroff of PressBoxonline.com reports. The Orioles are in need of a utility man with Ryan Flaherty heading to free agency, and Sardinas could fill that role in 2018. He signed a minor-league contract with the team in October after finishing last season with Triple-A Norfolk. Throughout his career, the 24-year-old has appeared in multiple games at first base, second base, third base and shortstop. Sardinas hit just .163/.226/.163 in a 29-game stint with the Padres last season before being designated for assignment.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Signs minor-league contract

Sardinas was re-signed by the Orioles on a minor-league contract, Rich Dubroff of PressBoxOnline.com reports. Sardinas played in 24 major-league games with the Padres last season, hitting just .163/.226/.163 in 53 at-bats before being designated for assignment by the club. After he latched on with Baltimore, the 24-year-old spent the rest of the year with Triple-A Norfolk, batting .319 with an OPS of .767. He will continue to serve as organizational depth within the infield moving forward.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Clears waivers and assigned to minors

Sardinas cleared waivers Friday and was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk. Sardinas was claimed off waivers Wednesday after being released by the Padres, so the Orioles will bring him aboard to provide organizational depth. The 24-year-old hit just .163/.226/.163 while seeing limited playing time with San Diego, but could overtake utility infielder Paul Janish for a roster spot if he can impress in Triple-A.

  • Orioles' Luis Sardinas: Claimed by Baltimore

Sardinas was claimed off waivers by the Orioles on Wednesday. After failing to beat out Erick Aybar for the starting shortstop role during spring training, Sardinas languished while seeing irregular duties off the bench, slashing .163/.226/.163 in 53 plate appearances before the Padres elected to drop him from the 40-man roster. The Orioles evidently still believe there's still some untapped potential in the 24-year-old, who at the very least, should give the team some extra depth at multiple spots around the diamond. He could replace Paul Janish as the club's utility infielder.

  • Padres' Luis Sardinas: Designated for assignment

Sardinas was designated for assignment Sunday. The roster move comes on the heels of the Padres claiming infielder Chase d'Arnaud off waivers from the Red Sox on Sunday. Sardinas hasn't exactly hit the lights out this season, as evidenced by his .163 average, no extra-base hits and single RBI across 49 at-bats, making him an easy choice to bump off the 40-man roster for the incoming d'Arnaud. He'll likely report to Triple-A El Paso if he clears waivers.

  • Padres' Luis Sardinas: Collects two hits in start Thursday

Sardinas received a rare start Thursday, going 2-for-4 in a loss to the Rangers. With the Padres visiting an American League club, the team was afforded an extra batter and Sardinas was the one to benefit Thursday. San Diego has another AL-road series against the White Sox coming up, so the 23-year-old could see another start in short order. That said, his .195/.250/.195 slash line in 44 plate appearances this season makes him an undesirable option even if he were to be penciled into the lineup.
