Overton was designated for assignment on Tuesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
The Padres needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Miguel Diaz, who was activated from the 60-day DL as a corresponding move. Overton, 26, is on his third team in two years, and while he used to be a notable prospect, his poor pitching of late may allow him to go unclaimed in the waiver process. He has a 6.65 ERA and just 11 strikeouts in 23 big-league innings split between the Mariners and Padres this season.
Overton (0-1) was hit hard over 4.2 innings against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing four earned runs on nine hits while notching three strikeouts.
Overton, making his first appearance with the Padres since being claimed off waivers from Seattle, had already allowed two runs on six hits before the wheels fell off in the fifth inning. Corey Seager and Justin Turner connected on back-to-back home runs before Logan Forsythe recorded his second hit of the night with a double off the center field wall. Overton was dismissed after 92 pitches and performed admirably considering it was his first big league appearance since May 20 and that it came against a team averaging over five runs per game (second best in the NL). It likely won't be enough to keep him in the starting rotation, as Trevor Cahill (shoulder) is slated to return Tuesday.
Overton was recalled from Triple-A El Paso and will start Saturday's game against the Dodgers.
As expected, Overton, who owns a 6.38 ERA and 8:2 K:BB through 18.1 innings this season (nine appearances, one start), was added to the roster ahead of his scheduled spot start. It's not an ideal matchup for Overton, as the Dodgers have a high-scoring offense. He'll likely head back to El Paso afterwards as Trevor Cahill (shoulder) is hoping to rejoin the rotation before the All-Star break.
Overton will start Saturday's game against the Dodgers, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Overton arrived in the clubhouse for Friday's game prior to his first start since May 20. He got roughed up during his last outing against the Diamondbacks, and has accumulated a 6.38 ERA with just eight strikeouts in 18.1 innings of work for the Mariners this season. Saturday will mark his first big-league game in a Padres uniform, but the 25-year-old will likely head back down to Triple-A El Paso afterwards, with Trevor Cahill (shoulder) returning from the disabled list in a week.
