McDonald was added to the club's 40-man roster, which means he will likely serve as a utility infielder on the major-league club. The team had to pay him a $100,000 bonus if McDonald was not on the 40-man roster by today. McDonald hit .116 in 69 at-bats last year. He's regarded as a strong fielder.

The Phillies traded infielder John McDonald to the Red Sox for right-handed reliever Nefi Ogando, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports Saturday.

McDonald batted .174/.208/.304 with one home run and three RBI in 23 at-bats with the Phillies. Ogando posted a 4.09 ERA in 55 innings of relief with Class A Carolina.

Phillies infielder John McDonald was called on to record the final out in the 18th inning Saturday against the Diamondbacks. McDonald, who replaced outfielder Casper Wells, allowed two hits and struck out one batter in a 12-7 loss.

"I wouldn't call what I did pitching," said McDonald, who thought he last pitched when he was 15 or 16 years old in American Legion ball, per MLB.com. "I was just trying to compete and get us out of the inning."

McDonald was designated for assignment by the Indians Wednesday to make room for Asdrubal Cabrera. McDonald is known mainly as a defensive specialist. He's hitting just .058 /.163/.079 in 38 at-bats. The Indians will receive a player to be named later or cash for McDonald.

The 38-year-old McDonald has gone 2 for 31 (.065) this season for the Pirates over 16 games. Prior to being acquired by the Indians, McDonald was at Triple-A Indianapolis. 

McDonald was acquired for a player to be named later and/or cash.

The Indians reportedly have acquired infielder John McDonald from Pittsburgh, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports Monday. The report is not confirmed.

McDonald's jersey was being brought into the Cleveland locker room before Monday's game in Texas. 

The 38-year-old McDonald has gone 2 for 31 (.065) this season for the Pirates over 16 games. Prior to being acquired by the Indians, McDonald was at Triple-A Indianapolis.

McDonald has been on the disabled list since May 14 due to back and elbow injuries.
