Schwindel signed a minor-league deal with the Tigers on Tuesday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Schwindel was designated for assignment and subsequently released by the Royals earlier in May after posting a .186/.237/.286 slash line at Triple-A. The 26-year-old did hit 24 home runs with a .506 slugging percentage at Triple-A last season, so the Tigers are undoubtedly hoping he can rediscover his power stroke.
Schwindel (oblique) was released by the Royals on Saturday.
Schwindel was an Opening Day starter for the Royals but was optioned after hitting 1-for-15 in his first taste of big-league action and subsequently designated for assignment. He's currently dealing with an oblique strain, which could temporarily hinder his chances of finding a new job.
Schwindel (oblique) was designated for assignment by the Royals on Tuesday, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
Schwindel is currently on the 7-day injured list due to an oblique strain, but he's been booted off the 40-man roster to make room for Nicky Lopez.
Schwindel is on the minor-league injured list with an oblique/intercostal strain, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
Schwindel went 1-for-15 in six games for the Royals earlier in the year. He's hitting just .186 in 19 games for Triple-A Omaha.
Schwindel was optioned to Triple-A Omaha.
To occupy the short side of a first-base platoon, a hitter needs to really do damage at the plate, and Schwindel did not hold up that end of the bargain (1-for-15) in the early going. The Royals summoned Jake Newberry from Triple-A to bolster the bullpen in a corresponding move.
Schwindel is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the White Sox.
Schwindel surprisingly slotted in as the Royals' starting first baseman and No. 5 hitter in Thursday's season opener, but he may have just received the nod since a lefty (Carlos Rodon) was starting for the opposition. According to Rustin Dodd of The Athletic, manager Ned Yost said the Royals would utility a loose platoon at first base, with Schwindel handling the smaller share of action and Ryan O'Hearn drawing most of the starts at the position.
The Royals selected Schwindel's contract and will include him in the lineup Thursday for their season opener against the White Sox. He'll start at first base and hit fifth.
Schwindel has raked in the high minors over the past three seasons and turned in an .842 OPS in 556 plate appearances at Triple-A Omaha in 2018. Despite his success at the dish, Schwindel's status as a 26-year-old, first-base-only prospect made it rather unlikely that he would break camp with the big club, so his inclusion on the roster is somewhat unexpected. Even more surprisingly, Schwindel will crack the lineup in the opener, as prevailing wisdom suggested that Ryan O'Hearn would slot in at first base. The Royals' decision to turn to Schwindel suggests he might now rank as the preferred option at the position. A platoon is also possible.
The Royals reassigned Schwindel to minor-league camp Sunday, Josh Vernier of 610 Sports reports.
Schwindel was considered a long shot for the Royals first base job, and his odds became even longer with the addition of Lucas Duda in late February. The 25-year-old is coming off his best professional season as he slashed .329/.349/.541 with 23 home runs between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha in 2017.
