Tigers' Omar Infante: On his way to Triple-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante will report to Triple-A Toledo after not making Detroit's Opening Day roster, Jason Beck of reports.

After he was assigned to minor-league camp late in spring training, Infante was expected to explore other big-league opportunities. However, it appears that none came to fruition, which likely played a role in convincing the veteran infielder to stick around and play in Toledo. Infante should provide Detroit with a solid source of organizational infield depth.

Tigers' Omar Infante: Expected to opt out Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante will likely opt out of his minor-league deal Sunday, Evan Woodbery of reports.

The veteran infielder rejoined the Tigers as a non-roster invitee this offseason and showed that he still had some life in his bat, slashing .349/.364/.535 over 43 at-bats. However, the Tigers have one of the most durable second basemen in baseball in Ian Kinsler and a younger player like Dixon Machado likely offers a bit more upside as a bench option. Woodbery adds that Infante will likely re-sign with the Tigers on another minor-league pact if there are no other suitors once he opts out.

Tigers' Omar Infante: Back to full strength
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante (back) has been deemed good to go for Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Infante isn't included in the lineup Wednesday, but should be available off the bench as a pinch-hitter or defensive replacement. The veteran second baseman has enjoyed a fairly productive spring, but he's not expected to crack the Tigers' Opening Day roster.

Tigers' Omar Infante: Out with stiff back
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante was scratched from Monday's lineup with back stiffness, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Infante felt something stiffen in his back while taking BP before the game, so the Tigers swapped him out of the lineup. It's unclear how long this will keep him sidelined, so consider him day-to-day until the team notes otherwise.

Tigers' Omar Infante: Unlikely for MLB role
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante likely won't make the big league roster despite posting strong numbers this spring, Jason Beck of reports.

The veteran infielder is slashing .353/.389/.471 this spring, but with Andrew Romine and Dixon Machado in tow, Infante seems to be the odd man out when it comes to reserve infield spots. However, this strong spring showing could act as a springboard to a major league job with another club, although he'll likely have to settle for an organizational depth role until that opportunity comes along.

Tigers' Omar Infante: Returns to Tigers on NRI deal
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante has signed a minor league contract with the Tigers that includes an invite to spring training.

He will return to the organization with whom he's spent the majority of his career; the one that signed him as an amateur free agent in 1999. Infante began 2016 in a starting role with Kansas City, but hit just .239/.279/.321 and was eventually released. The soon-to-be 35-year-old is organizational filler at this point.

Omar Infante: Released by Braves
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante was released by the Braves on Monday, Kevin McAlpin of the Braves Radio Network reports.

Braves' Omar Infante: Signs minor league deal in Atlanta
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante agreed to a minor league contract with the Braves on Thursday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.

Infante was cut loose by the Royals last week after passing through waivers unclaimed, and he'll now get the chance to continue his career in Atlanta. The 34-year-old was hitting just .239 this season after slashing a disappointing .220/.234/.318 in 2015, so it remains to be seen how much he has left in the tank but he could get an opportunity to provide middle infield depth in the majors at some point.

Omar Infante: Clears waivers Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante cleared waivers Thursday and is now an unrestricted free agent, Jeffrey Flanagan of reports.

Given his .239/.279/.321 slash line through 39 games and remaining contract, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Infante was able to pass through waivers unclaimed. Following two and a half mediocre seasons in Kansas City, he'll now be free to sign with any team and it's possible he'll attract some interest as a middle infield depth option.

Royals' Omar Infante: Placed on release waivers
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Royals requested release waivers on Infante, Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star reports.

Designated for assignment last week, Infante will now become a free agent if he isn't claimed by Thursday. Given his sizable contract in combination with his lack of production the past three years, he figures to pass through unclaimed.

Royals' Omar Infante: Designated for assignment Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante was designated for assignment Wednesday.

Infante had seen a drastic decline in his playing time of late, as his last at bat came June 2. The veteran second baseman lost his grip on a starting role following a rough May in which he hit just .211 and eventually gave way to Whit Merrifield full time. The 34-year-old hasn't hit better than .252 in a season since arriving in Kansas City in 2014, but it's possible he'll attract some interest from other teams as a middle infield depth option.

Royals' Omar Infante: Playing sparingly despite injuries in KC
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante's playing time is taken a significant hit recently despite a slew of injuries to the Kansas City infield. According to Jeffrey Flanagan of, Royals manager Ned Yost is currently defining Infante's role as "protection" against further injuries.

Infante hasn't started since June 2, while Cheslor Cuthert, Christian Colon, and Whit Merrifield have been seeing regularly playing time. With an empty .239/.279/.321 line through 39 games this season, the Royals appear to have accepted Infante's contract as a sunk cost. On the books at the prorated portion of $7.8 million for the rest of this season and at $8 million in 2017 (plus a $2 million buyout for a 2018 team option), there's no guarantee that Infante will retain a roster spot with the Royals as the season progresses.

Royals' Omar Infante: Benched for fourth time in six games
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante isn't in the lineup Sunday against the White Sox, Rustin Dodd of The Kansas City Star reports.

After maintaining a batting average of .300 for the first two weeks of the season, Infante has reverted back to provided limited offensive utility, just as was the case for much of 2015. Since April 16, he's gone just 19-for-90 (.211 average), with only six of his hits going for extra bases. The prolonged slump is beginning to cost Infante playing time, as he'll now be on the bench for the fourth time in six games while Whit Merrifield picks up a start at second base.

Royals' Omar Infante: Out for Game 1 Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Red Sox,'s Jeffrey Flanagan reports.

He has been starting roughly every other day for the Royals at the keystone, so it would stand to reason that he would get at least one game off Wednesday. Christian Colon will start at second base and hit seventh in Game 1.

Royals' Omar Infante: Out of lineup Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante is out of the lineup for Saturday's matchup with the Braves, Jeffrey Flanagan of reports.

This will be the third time in four games that the Royals have opted to go with Christian Colon at second as opposed to Infante. It makes sense that the Royals would want to ride Colon while he is striking the ball well, and Infante is just 0-for-8 in his last two games.

Royals' Omar Infante: In Friday's lineup
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Royals' Omar Infante: Out again Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Infante is not in the lineup Thursday for the second day in a row, according to's Jeffrey Flanagan.

Manager Ned Yost said recently he wanted to get Christian Colon more playing time at second base, and that has indeed been the case, as Colon's start Thursday will be his fourth in six games. Colon has not officially surpassed Infante on the depth chart, but the two figure to continue sharing the playing time at second base in some fashion.
