Astin was released by the Reds on Monday.
Astin spent the beginning of the season with Triple-A Louisville, putting up relatively middling numbers -- 4.70 ERA, 5:3 K:BB in 7.2 frames. He has a bit of big-league experience, but he'll likely be limited to a minor-league contract if he can land somewhere soon.
Astin cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Louisville on Monday.
Astin had a lackluster season with the Reds, pitching just eight innings over six games, during which he allowed six runs on nine hits and seven walks. In addition to struggling with his control, Astin couldn't keep the ball in the park, as two of those nine hits were home runs.
Astin was designated for assignment by the Reds on Tuesday.
Astin was cast off the 40-man roster to open up space for the contract selection of Deck McGuire. He compiled a 6.75 ERA and 2:7 K:BB through eight innings with the Reds this season, and his 6.10 ERA in 48.2 innings with the Bats wasn't much better. Astin will remain with Triple-A Louisville if he passes through waivers untouched.

The right-hander has been saddled with a 6.75 ERA with only two strikeouts and seven walks in eight big-league innings. Astin will continue serving as organizational depth with the Bats.
Astin had to come into Sunday's game against the Giants in the second inning after Tim Adleman left with a neck injury. He gave up three runs over three innings, allowing three hits and two walks, striking out one.
Those three runs came immediately in the second inning, putting the Reds in a 7-0 hole that they could not escape. Astin now has a 6.75 ERA and a 2:7 K:BB over eight big-league innings.
Aston gave up three runs on four hits, two of them homers, Monday night against the Yankees.
Astin was there to eat innings in a game where the Reds already trailed, but his inning of work blew the game wide-open. His previous four outings had gone much better, but it's worth noting that in five innings at the big league level so far he's recorded just one strikeout.
Astin was recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Sunday.
The Reds elected Sunday to option starting pitcher Amir Garrett to the minor leagues in order to manage his innings workload. In a corresponding move, Astin will again get the call to join the major-league squad and round out the back end of the team's bullpen.

The right-hander tossed four shutout appearances but is basically organizational depth. Astin could have a seat on the major-league shuttle for much of the year.

With the Reds in need of another bullpen arm after Amir Garrett failed to go four innings, Astin will rejoin the Reds for the third time this season, replacing Ariel Hernandez on the active roster. it could be another brief stint, however, with Rookie Davis (forearm) expected to return from the DL Wednesday.

Astin's call to the majors was short lived this time around, as the the right-hander appeared in just one game after receiving his promotion Wednesday. Regardless, the 25-year-old made the most of his situation, throwing two shutout innings in Thursday's loss to Milwaukee. The Reds need to clear the spot for a starter to replace Rookie Davis (forearm) this week, so Astin will have to continue his progression at Louisville for the time being, but certainly could be in line for a callup later this season.

Astin will return for his second stint with the big club already this season, replacing Rookie Davis (forearm) on the active roster. It could be another relatively short stay for Astin, as the Reds may need to open a spot for Sal Romano this weekend, if they indeed go that route to replace Davis in the rotation. Astin was used to record just one out in his major-league debut back on Opening Day.
Astin was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.
This was done to make room for Bronson Arroyo on the active roster, as Arroyo will start Saturday's game.
