Diaz was placed on the 60-day injured list Monday due to a lat strain, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports.
Joe Panik was added to the Blue Jays' 40-man roster in a corresponding move. The severity of Diaz's injury and his expected return date remain to be seen.
The Blue Jays placed Diaz on the 60-day injured list Sunday due to an unspecified injury, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Diaz made a Grapefruit League appearance as recently as March 9, and no reports surfaced in the week that followed indicating that he was dealing with any sort of injury. In any event, he'll be sidelined for at least the next two months while recovering from the unspecified issue, with Diaz's move to the 60-day IL opening up a spot on the 40-man roster for infielder Joe Panik.
Diaz was recalled by the Blue Jays on Wednesday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Diaz received his first big-league opportunity in early August, walking four batters and allowing two runs while recording just two outs in his only appearance. He'll be hoping to pitch at least one more time over the final four games of the season.
Diaz was optioned to Double-A New Hampshire on Monday.
Diaz jumped straight from Double-A to the majors on Saturday and looked generally unprepared in his first big-league appearance, allowing two runs and walking four batters while recording just two outs Sunday against the Orioles. Brock Stewart was recalled in a corresponding move.
Diaz was called up from Double-A New Hampshire Saturday.
Nick Kingham (oblique) was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. Diaz owns an 8-7 record, 4.15 ERA and 1.30 WHIP across 19 starts with New Hampshire. The 22-year-old right-hander will look to provide bullpen depth upon making his major-league debut.
Diaz's contract was purchased by the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Diaz was promoted to the 40-man roster in an effort to protect him from the impending Rule 5 draft. The 22-year-old prospect hasn't pitched above High-A in his brief four-year professional career but he's experienced success within the lower levels of Toronto's farm system (2.08 ERA over 47 frames with Low-A Lansing in 2018) and appears to possess good arm talent.
