Stout is drawing interest from major-league teams after finishing the 2023 season pitching for the CTBC Brothers of the Chinese Professional Baseball League, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Stout began the year with Triple-A Tacoma in the Mariners organization before posting a 3.28 ERA and 79:13 K:BB over 68.2 frames for the CTBC Brothers. The 30-year-old left-hander has also piqued interest from clubs in Japan and Korea. If he returns to the States, he seems likely to have to settle for a minor-league contract.... See More ... Stout was released by the Cubs on Thursday, Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register reports. Stout pitched 22.1 innings in the majors last season, logging a 5.64 ERA and 1.84 ERA in the process. He had much more success in Triple-A (2.95 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 42.2 IP) but has yet to make an appearance in 2023. Stout (back) rejected an outright assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis and elected free agency Thursday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports. Stout was acquired by the Pirates from the Cubs in June but won't remain with Pittsburgh through the offseason. Stout was placed on the 15-day injured list with lower-back discomfort Thursday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Stout was hit hard during Wednesday's relief appearance against the Yankees, allowing four runs on three hits and a walk while striking out one in one inning. It's possible that the southpaw's back injury contributed to his struggles, and he'll be forced to miss the remainder of the year after landing on the IL. Stout was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to serve as the 29th man for Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mets, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. The Cubs selected Stout's contract from Triple-A Iowa on Monday. The addition of Stout gives the Cubs a fresh left-handed arm out of the bullpen after southpaw Sean Newcomb was designated for assignment in a corresponding move one day after serving up five runs in an inning of relief in an 18-4 loss to the Yankees. Stout's lone previous big-league experience came in 2018 as a member of the Royals, with whom he pitched 2.1 innings while giving up six earned runs. Marlins' Eric Stout: Joins Miami on MiLB deal
Stout signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on June 9 and was assigned to Triple-A Jacksonville. After becoming a free agent following the 2019 season, Stout had spent the last year and a half in the independent ranks before landing with the Marlins. He'll look to impress at Jacksonville with the hope of earning his first call-up to the big leagues since 2018.
