The Diamondbacks outrighted Miller to Triple-A Reno on Friday.
Miller cleared waivers after Arizona designated him for assignment last week when it needed to clear a 40-man roster spot for the newly signed Wilmer Flores. The southpaw reliever will likely open the upcoming campaign at Reno, where he posted a 7.71 ERA and 52:63 K:BB across 42 frames in 2018.
Miller was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Monday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
Miller was the roster casualty needed to free up a spot for Wilmer Flores, who officially signed a one-year deal with the Diamondbacks on Monday. The southpaw spent the majority of 2018 with Triple-A Reno, struggling to a 7.71 ERA, 2.60 WHIP and 52:63 K:BB across 42 innings of relief.
The Diamondbacks optioned Miller to Triple-A Reno earlier this month, ArizonaSports.com reports.
Miller split time between Reno and Double-A Jackson last season, logging a 2.93 ERA and 94 strikeouts while holding opposing hitters to a .190 average over 70.2 frames. Those results prompted the Diamondbacks to protect Miller from the Rule 5 draft and add him to the 40-man roster over the winter, but the lefty wasn't under any serious consideration for an Opening Day assignment with the big club. He'll likely assume high-leverage work with Reno and should earn his first callup to the majors later this season.
Miller was added to the Diamondbacks' 40-man roster Monday to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.
Miller appeared in 31 games at Double-A Jackson and 22 at Triple-A Reno during the 2017 season. Between the two he combined to pitch 70.2 innings and posted a 2.93 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Miller could earn a chance to pitch in the big club's bullpen during the 2018 campaign should he continue his solid performance.
