Nationals' Mason Thompson: Dealt loss Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Thompson (1-3) failed to record an out, yielding two runs on a hit, a hit batter and a walk to take the loss versus Colorado on Wednesday.

The right-hander made a mess of things in the third inning, allowing Colorado to take the lead after a long rain delay. Thompson has allowed six runs (five earned) through 10.1 innings across 14 appearances in September. For the year, he has a 3.65 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 23:14 K:BB in 24.2 innings between Washington and San Diego. He's also posted seven holds in 30 outings.

Nationals' Mason Thompson: Available out of bullpen Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Thompson was added to the Nationals' 26-man roster Saturday and will be available to pitch against the Cubs, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

One of several prospects acquired in the Nationals' trade deadline teardown, Thompson will be available to debut with his new club after appearing in only four games for the Padres this season, the most recent of which was July 1.

Nationals' Mason Thompson: Slated to join big-league club
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Thompson is expected to join the major-league roster Saturday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

Thompson made his major-league debut earlier this season and allowed a run in three innings across four relief appearances. He's posted a 5.34 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 28.2 innings at Triple-A El Paso this year, and he'll now get a chance to carve out a big-league role with his new club.

Nationals' Mason Thompson: Dealt to Nats
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Thompson will be traded from the Padres to the Nationals on Thursday along with Jordy Barley in exchange for Daniel Hudson (COVID-19), Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

Thompson was originally drafted by the Padres with the 85th overall pick in the 2016 first-year player draft. He dealt with a shoulder injury that slowed his progress through the team's system, but he did ultimately make his major-league debut earlier this season. Though Thompson was with Triple-A El Paso at the time of the trade, it's possible that he'll get a look with the Nationals given their current rebuild.

Padres' Mason Thompson: Returns to Triple-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Thompson was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The 23-year-old was added to the big-league roster June 20 and appeared in four games during his first taste of the majors. Thompson will head back to Triple-A after giving up a run on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk over three frames.

Padres' Mason Thompson: Earns hold in big-league debut
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Thompson was credited with a hold in Tuesday's win over the Dodgers. He faced two batters, walking one and retiring the other on a fielder's choice.

The 23-year-old was summoned in a high-leverage situation in his first MLB outing, coming into the game in the eighth inning with a runner on first base and San Diego holding a two-run lead. He threw a wild pitch and then walked Max Muncy but got out of the inning by retiring AJ Pollock on a fielder's choice grounder. Thompson's 5.89 ERA and 1.33 WHIP this season at the Triple-A level aren't particularly impressive, so it would be a surprise if he's given consistent high-leverage opportunities with the big club despite Tuesday's successful debut.

Padres' Mason Thompson: Earns big-league call-up
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Padres recalled Thompson from Triple-A El Paso ahead of Sunday's game against the Reds, MLB.com reports.

San Diego brought up Thompson and Nick Ramirez from Triple-A ahead of the series finale to provide some fresh arms after the team opted for a bullpen day in Saturday's 7-5 win. Thompson supplied a 5.89 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 18.1 innings at El Paso, so he likely won't be counted on for high-leverage work in his first stint in the big leagues.

Padres' Mason Thompson: Optioned to Triple-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Thompson was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

Thompson began spring training at major-league camp and allowed four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two over 2.1 innings during four three relief appearances this spring. The right-hander's contract was selected by the Padres in November to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, and it appears as though he'll advance to the Triple-A level to begin the year.

Padres' Mason Thompson: Shielded from Rule 5 draft
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Thompson's contract was selected by the Padres on Friday.

The move prevents Thompson from being selected in the Rule 5 draft. Whether or not he would have been chosen is unclear, as he's only thrown 22.1 innings above Low-A ball, struggling to a 7.66 ERA and a 22:19 K:BB for High-A Lake Elsinore in 2019.

Padres' Mason Thompson: Begins season at Low-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Thompson (shoulder) is listed on Low-A Fort Wayne's roster to start the 2018 season.

Thompson suffered a shoulder injury in late July of last season, but should be ready to go for the upcoming campaign. He appeared in just seven games in 2017 for Fort Wayne, allowing 14 runs on 23 hits while striking out 28 across 27.0 innings. Thompson will hope to stay healthy and see more action in 2018.

Padres' Mason Thompson: Lands on MiLB DL with shoulder issue
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Thompson was placed on the disabled list with Low-A Fort Wayne due to shoulder inflammation, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

No word on the severity of the issue has come forth, so a timetable for his return is tough to gauge, especially given how liberally minor league squads use the disabled list. Prior to the injury, Thompson produced a 4.67 ERA and a 28:12 K:BB in seven starts (27 innings) for the TinCaps.

Padres' Mason Thompson: Low-A assignment on tap
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Thompson was promoted to Low-A Fort Wayne on Monday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The 85th overall pick in the 2016 first-year player draft, Thompson impressed in his professional debut last season, posting a 2.25 ERA and a 12:5 K:BB in 12 innings at rookie ball. This gave the Padres enough confidence to send him to full-season ball already despite him being just two years removed from Tommy John surgery that cut off his high school career. He'll look to carry that prior success into this next rung on the organizational ladder.
