Mejia was traded from Miami to Arizona along with Caleb Smith and Julio Frias in exchange for Starling Marte, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Mejia was a bit of a late bloomer, as he was added to Miami's 40-man roster this past offseason despite the fact he had not pitched above High-A. He logged earned run averages below 2.30 at Low-A and High-A last year and has a 5.40 ERA, 1.90 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB in 10 innings (three appearances) in the majors this season. The Diamondbacks will likely assign him to Double-A or Triple-A in 2021.
Mejia was optioned to the Marlins' alternate training site Saturday.
Mejia has made three starts for the Marlins this year, posting a 5.40 ERA and 1.90 WHIP over 10 innings as he was charged with losses in his past two outings. However, he'll return to alternate camp after Robert Dugger (undisclosed) was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move.
Mejia (0-2) allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four over 3.2 innings as he was charged with the loss Sunday against the Nationals.
Mejia hasn't been very impressive over his first three major-league starts, and he was charged with his second consecutive loss Sunday. He's failed to last longer than four innings in any of his appearances and could find himself back with the alternate squad once the Marlins' starting rotation returns to full health. The right-hander now carries a 5.40 ERA and 11:6 K:BB over 10 innings this season. It's unclear whether he'll get another turn in the rotation in the near future.
Mejia (0-1) took the loss Tuesday, giving up three runs on four hits and two walks over four innings as the Marlins were downed 8-3 by the Mets. He struck out one.
The 23-year-old's second big-league appearance was bumpier than his first, as Mejia served up two homers among his 56 pitches (37 strikes). There's little to indicate he's ready for a regular spot in the rotation, but until the Marlins start getting pitchers back from the COVID-19 injured list, he'll continue to get pressed into service as the team's fifth starter. Mejia will carry a 5.68 ERA and 1.58 WHIP into his next outing Sunday, on the road against the Nats.
Mejia was recalled from the Marlins' alternate training site ahead of his scheduled start against the Mets on Tuesday.
Mejia will make his second start of the season after he was relatively effective in his major-league debut earlier in the season. In that start, he allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out six over 2.1 innings against the Mets. He'll get to face a familiar foe in his second major-league start Tuesday.
Mejia will likely start Tuesday's game against the Mets, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
The ballclub has yet to recall Mejia from the alternate training site, but he appears to be the favorite to toe the rubber Tuesday following a pair of moves Monday evening. Mejia has appeared in one game this season, surrendering one run on two hits and two walks while fanning six over 2.1 innings Aug. 7 against the Mets.
Mejia was optioned to the Marlins' alternate training site Saturday.
Mejia skipped two levels to make his MLB debut amidst the Marlins' coronavirus outbreak and looked good, striking out six while allowing one run over 2.1 innings against the Mets on Friday. He seemed to have done enough to earn another appearance, though it's not clear when that will come.
Mejia didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 4-3 win over the Mets, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over 2.1 innings. He struck out six.
Making his major-league debut, Mejia got an early hook after 67 pitches (43 strikes) but looked very good while he was on the mound, striking out Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil and Michael Conforto in the first inning before serving up a solo shot to Dominic Smith in the second. The 23-year-old right-hander mainly relied on his 92-94 mph fastball but effectively mixed in a curveball, slider and changeup, and this performance could have been good enough to earn him another start. The Marlins currently have two off-days set for Monday and Thursday next week, however, and their rotation plans are thus very flexible as they continue to patch together a roster in the wake of their COVID-19 outbreak.
Mejia was activated off the Marlins' taxi squad and will start against the Mets for his big-league debut Friday, though the game is expected to be a bullpen game, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Mejia recorded an excellent 2.09 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in 90.1 innings last season, backed up by a 25.5 percent strikeout rate and a 6.9 percent walk rate, but those numbers came at the Low-A and High-A levels. With the Marlins still without a large number of players due to the team's coronavirus outbreak, they'll be forced to turn to a handful of players like Mejia to make their debuts far ahead of schedule.
The Marlins optioned Mejia to High-A Jupiter on March 6.
Though Miami shielded Mejia from the Rule 5 draft over the winter, his addition to the 40-man roster shouldn't be taken as a sign that his big-league debut is imminent. The right-hander only made five appearances for Jupiter last season, so the Marlins likely want to see how he fares over a larger sample of innings before testing him against higher-level competition. Mejia was highly impressive in his first exposure to the Florida State League, posting a 2.28 ERA and 0.86 WHIP across 23.2 frames.
