The Giants optioned Canario (shoulder) to their minor-league camp Monday.
The 20-year-old outfielder is one of the more prized prospects in the Giants' farm system, but since he has yet to play above the rookie-ball level, he wasn't in contention for a spot on San Francisco's Opening Day roster. Once he's fully cleared from the surgery he required on his left shoulder last November, Canario will likely report to one of the Giants' full-season affiliates.
Canario's (shoulder) contract was purchased by the Giants on Friday.
Canario getting protected from the Rule 5 draft was a forgone conclusion, but the bigger news is that he is recovering from mid-November surgery to repair a torn labrum and dislocated left shoulder. He may not be available for the start of the season and his production could be negatively affected when he initially returns. That said, few players in the minors have as much power potential as Canario, so his future remains bright as long as he can cut down on the strikeouts.
Canario dislocated his shoulder and underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.
Canario is in the Giants' future plans, as he was a part of the team's 60-man player pool this summer and was also impressing during the Instructional League. The injury sets back his timeline to reach the big leagues, however, as he has yet to play in any full-season league as a professional. No timetable for Canario to return to baseball activities has been announced.
Canario was added to the Giants' player pool Wednesday.
Canario is highly unlikely to make his big-league debut this season, as he's yet to advance beyond short-season ball. The 20-year-old is an interesting prospect with a strong arm and big raw power, but his inclusion in the pool is likely nothing more than an attempt to help him continue his development as smoothly as possible in a very disrupted 2020 campaign.
