Stephan allowed one run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts over 1.2 innings in Wednesday's 10-2 loss to the Twins.
Logan Allen had an awful start, and Stephan was needed to help get through the second inning. He also pitched the third, allowing a solo shot to Willians Astudillo as the Twins ran away with the game. The 25-year-old Stephan has a 5.91 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB across 10.2 innings. He's mostly worked in a multi-inning, low-leverage role this season. He's also given up four home runs -- keeping the ball in the yard will be critical for his effectiveness this season.
Stephan allowed two runs on two hits and struck out one in one inning in Saturday's 11-3 win over the Tigers.
Stephan pitched the ninth inning and allowed a two-run home run to Jeimer Candelario. Luckily for Cleveland, it wasn't a close game. Stephan had one scoreless appearance this season prior to Saturday's rocky outing. The 25-year-old right-hander will likely see low-leverage assignments like he did Saturday. As a Rule 5 pick, Stephan has to be kept on the roster all season, or he'll be offered back to the Yankees.
Stephan was informed that he's won an Opening Day roster spot Sunday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
Stephan was selected in the Rule 5 draft in December and evidently did enough in camp to stick around. He'll have to be kept on the big-league roster all season or be offered back to the Yankees. He's likely ticketed for low-leverage work, as he's yet to advance beyond Double-A and recorded a 5.24 ERA at that level in 12 starts in 2019.
Cleveland selected Stephan with the 15th pick of the Rule 5 draft.
Once a prominent prospect with the Yankees, Stephan struggled while working as a starter once he was promoted above High-A back in 2018. His fastball/slider combo appealed to Cleveland, and he could have a future as a quality big-league reliever if he can throw enough strikes.
Stephan was promoted to Double-A Trenton on Tuesday, Matt Kardos of MLB.com reports.
Stephan spent all of six weeks at High-A Tampa before earning the promotion with downright dominant numbers this season. The 2017 third-round pick had a 1.98 ERA and 0.78 WHIP with 49 strikeouts and nine walks over 41 innings in the Florida State League.
Stephan struck out seven batters across six scoreless innings Wednesday, allowing just three hits while issuing zero walks for High-A Tampa.
He now boasts a 1.80 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 14 strikeouts through 10 frames in the Florida State League. The Yankees aggressively assigned Stephan to High-A, allowing the 22-year-old righty to bypass Low-A entirely, but he has proven to be up for the challenge. He works with a low-90s fastball that plays up due to late life and a funky delivery. Stephan's top secondary pitch is a swing-and-miss slider and he is working on improving his changeup.
Stephan will open the year at High-A Tampa, MLB.com's Jim Callis reports.
He didn't pitch above the New York-Penn League last year after the Yankees selected him with the 92nd overall pick, so this speaks to how advanced the organization thinks the 6-foot-4 righty is. He is 22, so it's not like he's young for the level, but the jump in competition will still be illuminating. His mid-90s fastball and quality slider make the big-league bullpen a legitimate fallback option, but the Yankees are expected to continue developing him as a starter in hopes that his changeup ticks up in the coming years.
