The Marlins have added insult to injury to first baseman Jeff Baker, who is on the disabled list with an intercostal strain. They have released Baker, per

Baker had just one hit in his last 17 at-bats before going down and has posted a weak slash line of .208/.288/.375 on the year.

The Marlins have placed first baseman Jeff Baker on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 8, with a left intercostal strain, the Miami Herald has reported.

Baker, who sustained the injury Tuesday, is batting .208 in just 72 at-bats this season.

Marlins first baseman Jeff Baker left Tuesday's game against the Red Sox after one inning with left oblique pain, according to the Miami Herald

Baker struck out in his only at-bat before being replaced in the bottom of the second inning. Michael Morse moved from left field to first base, with Ichiro Suzuki entering the game in left.

The Marlins have not provided any further updates on Baker's status.

Marlins' Jeff Baker gets another start in place of Justin Bour

The Marlins will start Jeff Baker at first base in Saturday's game, in place of Justin Bour.

Bour has started 30 games at first this season, but Baker has gotten the call three times in the last four games. 

Baker will be starting his twelfth game at first base this year. He'll bat fifth in the lineup.

Marlins first baseman Jeff Baker stepped up when most of his teammates didn't in his team's 10-5 loss to the Rockies on Saturday.

Baker went 2 for 5 with two RBI in the loss. He is now hitting .282/.378/.487 on the season with two home runs and six RBI in 39 at-bats.

Marlins 1B Jeff Baker hits first 2015 home run on Saturday

Marlins first baseman Jeff Baker put the icing on the cake in Saturday's win over the Mets. Baker, who was making just his fifth start of the season, launched a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning, putting his team up 9-5, which would be the final score.

The home run was Baker's only hit of the game, and is his first longball since August 2014.

Marlins first baseman Michael Morse and left fielder Christian Yelich were given the day off against left-hander Alex Wood and the Braves on Saturday. Jeff Baker will take over at first base and bat fifth, while Ichiro Suzuki will bat sixth and play left field in Yelich's absence.

Morse has been held without a hit over his last 11 at-bats. He is hitting .214 on the year and is a .143 lifetime hitter against Wood.

Yelich is a lifetime .409 (9 for 22) hitter against the southpaw, but is hitting.160 (4 for 25) since returning from the disabled list.

Marlins' Dee Gordon returns to lineup Sunday

Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon is back in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants.

Gordon was held out of the last two games with a leg issue but was able to return Sunday as expected. He has hit .437/.461/.521 with 12 stolen bases in 119 at-bats. Jeff Baker, who drew the start for Gordon Saturday but had to come out with an oblique injury, is on the bench.

The Marlins are a coin flip (-105) against the Giants Sunday.

Marlins little-used second baseman Jeff Baker was removed from the game Saturday night in San Francisco with a tight right oblique, per the Miami Herald. He is considered day-to-day.

Donovan Solano replaced him.

Baker had just 12 at-bats in 12 games played heading into action.

Marlins reserve infielder Jeff Baker will get his second start of the season and first at second base Saturday in San Francisco and will bat sixth, filling in for Dee Gordon, who’s out of the lineup (leg) for the second straight game. 

Gordon is dealing with a sore right leg muscle. He is expected to be back in the starting lineup for Sunday's game, according to

Marlins first baseman Michael Morse was given the day off and held out of the lineup on Saturday. Morse, who is sitting for just the second time this season, is batting a subpar .154 with zero home runs and one RBI over his last 10 games. He is just 6 for 22 lifetime against Phillies starter Cole Hamels.

Jeff Baker received replaced Morse at first base on Saturday against the Phillies, and batted fifth for manager Mike Redmond. This is Baker's first start of 2015, as he has received just six pinch-hit at-bats for the Marlins. With the lefty Hamels on the mound for the Phillies, the Marlins have opted to keep Justin Bour on the bench.

Marlins infielder Jeff Baker went 2 for 6 with his first home run of the season in his team's 9-7 loss to the Dodgers Saturday.

Baker's solo home run came in the second inning and evened the score at 1-1. It was just his fifth hit of the season, and he followed with a single later in the game. Baker has hit .130/.222/.217 in 46 at-bats.

Jeff Baker might man cleanup spot on opening day

Marlins second baseman Jeff Baker will not only start the regular season opener Monday against Colorado, but he could bat cleanup behind Giancarlo Stanton against left-hander Jorge De La Rosa, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Mike Redmond does not want to place left-handed batter Garrett Jones behind Stanton for fear that De La Rosa will pitch around the latter. Baker boasts a career .298 batting average against southpaws and hit .314 against them in 2013.

Neither Baker nor fellow platoon second baseman Derek Dietrich are likely long for the job. They are merely manning the position until starter Rafael Furcal returns from a hamstring injury that could land him on the disabled list.

Baker missed the last few days with a minor quad injury but should be fine moving forward. He is 5 for 18 with two walks in eight games this spring.
