Jeff Francis: Retiring from baseball
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Francis announced his retirement from baseball Tuesday, the Denver Post reports.

The lefty turned in strong numbers in his time with the Blue Jays' Triple-A Buffalo affiliate in 2015 (2.35 ERA, 1.05 WHIP), but was knocked around at the major league level and ultimately decided "it was time" to hang up the cleats. A first-round pick in 2002 (ninth overall), he helped lead the Rockies to the World Series in 2007, going 17-7 with a 4.22 ERA, and ranks third in Rockies history with 64 career wins.

Blue Jays' Jeff Francis bails out rookie pitcher to earn first win
by Michael Hurcomb | CBS Sports Staff

After Blue Jays rookie starting pitcher Daniel Norris lasted just three innings and 78 pitches on Thursday at Cleveland, Toronto leaned on veteran pitcher Jeff Francis to help pick up the slack. He did just that, earning his first relief win of the season as he allowed one run on three hits and no walks in 2 1/3 innings.

Francis has a 3.60 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 10 innings (four relief outings) this season.

"He's a veteran strike-thrower," catcher Russell Martin said, per "He's kind of deceptive -- everything comes out of the same angle. He hides the ball well and has got two different breaking balls with a nice changeup. He kind of varies the speeds on his fastball a little bit and just does enough to keep guys off balance. That's what he's been doing well."

Blue Jays still looking for lefty for bullpen
by Shawn Krest |

The Blue Jays are looking for another lefthander for their bullpen, as Marcus Stroman's season-ending injury has created a ripple effect throughout the pitching staff.

Stroman's vacancy in the starting rotation will be filled by Aaron Sanchez, who was expected to share closing duties with Brett Cecil

That means Cecil can't help with relief in the middle innings, as was the original plan when he was slated as a co-closer. Manager John Gibbons told's Gregor Chisholm that it would be "ideal" to find another southpaw to help with the mid-innings.

Jeff Francis , signed by the team during the offseason, is a candidate. The 33-year-old posted a 5.85 ERA over 20 innings with three teams last year.

"He's a different type pitcher now, but I could see a place on this team for him. ... He's going to come out and throw strikes, and that's so valuable coming out of the bullpen," Gibbons said. "You don't want to bring in guys trying to find the strike zone. He can be tough on lefties, but he can also get righties out. I think, too, coming out of the bullpen in that role, that can extend his career another four or five years. He's a great competitor."

Colt Hynes, who went 1-4 with a 3.67 for two Triple-A teams last year, is also a candidate for the spot.
