Royals' Jason Vargas: Pushes win streak to three with 6.1 shutout innings
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vargas (17-10) allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out seven over 6.1 shutout innings to beat the Blue Jays on Thursday.

Vargas came in with a 7.11 ERA in 12 starts since pitching in the All-Star Game, but flashed his first half form in this one while winning a 1-0 pitchers' duel over J.A. Happ. The veteran lefty has now won three consecutive starts after dropping each of his previous four, helping Kansas City stay faintly within striking distance of the second AL Wild Card spot. If the team doesn't move him up in an effort to make a playoff push, Vargas will make his final appearance of the season Wednesday against the Tigers.

Royals' Jason Vargas: Ends Cleveland's record-breaking streak Friday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vargas (16-10) pitched five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four and picking up the win Friday against the Indians.

The crafty southpaw put a stop to the Tribe's record-breaking streak of 22 straight wins. Friday also pushed Vargas into a tie atop the AL with 16 wins. After reeling off six losses in seven starts from Aug. 2 to Sept. 5, the veteran has now grabbed back-to-back wins for the first time since before the Midsummer Classic. Vargas will go for three straight when he toes the rubber in Toronto for his next start on Thursday.

Royals' Jason Vargas: Rebounds for 15th win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vargas (15-10) allowed a single run on four hits and a walk while striking out three batters through five innings during Sunday's win over Minnesota.

Vargas had allowed at least three runs in each of his past seven outings dating back to Aug. 2, so this was an bounce-back outing from the veteran lefty. However, he's still up to a 4.15 ERA and 1.33 WHIP for the campaign. Considering he finished the first half with 2.62 and 1.15 marks, that's a significant dropoff, and it's probably wise to be selective with his matchups moving forward. A daunting road game against Cleveland at Progressive Field is up next for Vargas, too.

Royals' Jason Vargas: Going from bad to worse
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vargas (14-10) was mauled by the Tigers to the tune of seven runs on six hits and a walk over just two innings in Tuesday's 13-2 loss.

After setting down the side in order in the first inning, Vargas completely fell apart in the second. He started the frame by hitting a batter and walking another, then gave up a two-run double, an RBI single and a two-run homer before recording the first out; a second two-run shot rounded out the scoring and ensured that Vargas didn't come out to pitch the third inning. The veteran lefty, so good in the first half, has been an absolute train wreck over his last six starts -- over 28.1 innings, he's given up 29 earned runs, thanks in no small part to nine homers. Starting him in fantasy is a hard-to-justify gamble at this point.

Royals' Jason Vargas: Loses for fifth time in six starts
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vargas (14-9) took another loss Wednesday after giving up five runs on seven hits -- including three homers -- to the Rays. He struck out one and walked one over six innings of work.

After opening the season with a 13-4 record and a 3.00 ERA over his first 20 outings, Vargas is now 1-5 in his last six starts. It hasn't been bad luck -- the veteran lefty has been tagged for a fantasy-team-ruining 25 runs through 31.1 innings in that span. The long ball has been hurting him, and while his control wasn't bad Wednesday, this six-game stretch has seen him put up a 3.7 BB/9, hit two batters and throw three wild pitches. He's seriously hard to trust right now, but at least he'll get a good bit of rest before making his next start Tuesday in Detroit.
