Report: Raul Ibanez withdraws from Rays' managerial search
by Michael Hurcomb | CBS Sports Staff

The list of managerial candidates for the Rays was reduced by one Thursday after Raul Ibanez withdrew his name due to family considerations, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The remaining two candidates are Kevin Cash and Don Wakamatsu.

Ibanez was a finalist for the job despite having no managerial experience. He just finished his 19th season in the majors, batting .167 with five home runs and 26 RBI in 90 games between the Angels and Royals. He is a career .272 hitter with a .465 slugging percentage and .801 OPS in 2,161 games.

Royals outfielder Raul Ibanez is one of the three finalists for the Rays manager position, according to the Tampa Bay Times

The 42-year-old hit .167 over 246 at-bats last season, and was a surprise candidate for the position. He'll have to beat out Kevin Cash and Dom Wakamatsu. It's unclear if Ibanez will continue to look for work as a player if he doesn't get the job.

Raul Ibanez released by Angels
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

The Angels have released struggling veteran outfielder Raul Ibanez.

The 42-year-old Ibanez emerged from a season-long slump with hits in each of his first three games, but it wasn't enough to save him. His recent surge served only to improve his stat line to .157/.258/.265.

Ibanez hit three home runs early in the year after slugging 29 in 2013, but had not gone deep since April 14.

C.J. Cron becoming sadly familiar with part-time role
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

A strict platoon situation has prevented promising Angels designated hitter C.J. Cron from starting since June 11. He continued to sit when the team played National League rules in Atlanta and remained on the bench for three games in Cleveland against right-handed starters.

Mike Scioscia has opted to remain loyal to 43-year-old Raul Ibanez against righties despite his .153/.257/.258 stat line.

"It's how it works," Cron told MLB.com. "Obviously, I want to be in there as much as possible. But I'm not in the lineup, so I'll be ready in case a pinch-hit [opportunity] comes, or whatever."

Raul Ibanez continues to play despite struggles
by Chris Cwik |

Angels outfielder Raul Ibanez continues to get playing time during his slump, according to the Los Angeles Times

Though the team was rained out Wednesday, Ibanez was slated to start his third consecutive game. Ibanez didn't have particularly strong numbers against starting pitcher Justin Masterson, but manager Mike Scioscia said Ibanez has been making strides in the batter's box.

Ibanez starting comes at the expense of C.J. Cron. Cron has shown solid skills in the majors, but could head back to the minors in order to get consistent at-bats if Ibanez continues to get time. Ibanez is expected to be in the team's starting lineup Thursday.

Raul Ibanez will sit in NL parks
by Chris Cwik |

Angels outfielder Raul Ibanez will likely sit when the team plays interleague games, according to MLB.com.

"It's an unfortunate thing about going to play a National League club, but it's what we'll do," manager Mike Scioscia said. Ibanez will see occasional spot starts in the outfield, but he'll mainly be relagated to pinch hit duty. Scioscia added that some time to rest might be a good thing for the struggling Ibanez.

Through 60 at-bats, Ibanez is hitting .150.

But he rebounded in style Tuesday night by bashing a two-run homer in the fourth inning for the Angels.

Ibanez added two strikeouts to his early-season ledger, but added a single in the ninth inning to raise his batting average to .250.

Angels need Raul Ibanez to be more versatile
by Chris Cwik |

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said he needs designated hitter Raul Ibanez to be more versatile, according to MLB.com.

Scioscia said Ibanez will see time in the outfield and at first this season. Ibanez was used in the outfield last season, but has not played first base since 2010. That season, he was used as an emergency defensive replacement at first one time. He actually started nine games at first for Seattle in 2009.

Ibanez hit .242/.306/.487 in 454 at-bats last season.

Raul Ibanez expects to perform at 'high level'
by Michael Hurcomb | CBS Sports Staff

Newly signed Raul Ibanez has no doubts he will be able to contribute as the Angels' primary designated hitter, even though he will turn 42 in June.

"If I didn't know that I could perform at a high level, then I wouldn't even play the game," Ibanez said on a conference call Monday morning. "I definitely expect to contribute to this team and to be a part of continuing the winning tradition here."

The 18-year veteran hit 29 homers with a .793 OPS last year for the Mariners. However, his numbers declined in the second half. After hitting .267/.314/.578 with 24 home runs in the first half, Ibanez hit just .203/.295/.345 with five homers after the All-Star break.

Ibanez's decline could have been related to the 800-plus innings he played in the outfield. He admitted Monday that spending more time at DH should help him avoid fatigue, but he won't back down from playing in the outfield.

"You'll never hear me say that anything ever impacted me, because I played on the field. If they need me to play the field next year for whatever reason, then I fully expect to be able to do that and contribute," Ibanez said. "I'm preparing this offseason, obviously, like I do every offseason. There's no such thing, in my opinion, as preparing in the offseason to DH. You prepare to be a baseball player. You prepare to be an athlete. You prepare to be athletic. ... That's what I'm doing now."
