  • Cubs' Johnny Field: Moves to minors

Field went unclaimed on waivers Tuesday and was sent outright to Triple-A Iowa.

Field was claimed off waivers by the Cubs at the start of November and will remain in the organization after being removed from the 40-man roster last week. The 26-year-old should provide outfield depth for the Cubs next season after posting a .222/.254/.403 slash line over 83 games in his rookie campaign with the Rays and Twins.

  • Cubs' Jerry Vasto: Sent to minors

Vasto cleared waivers Tuesday and was assigned outright to Triple-A Iowa.

Vasto was claimed off waivers by the Cubs at the end of October, but apparently went unclaimed after being waived this time around. The 26-year-old may have a chance in spring training to reclaim a spot on the 40-man roster after posting a 3.08 ERA and 1.34 WHIP at the Triple-A level with he Rockies and Royals in 2018.

  • Cubs' Justin Steele: Promoted to 40-man roster

Steele was added to the 40-man roster by the Cubs on Tuesday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Steele was granted Rule 5 draft protection after seeing limited time on the mound in 2018. He managed to come back from Tommy John surgery and could begin the 2019 campaign at Double-A Tennessee.

  • Cubs' Rowan Wick: Traded to Cubs

Wick was traded from the Padres to the Cubs on Tuesday in exchange for infielder Jason Vosler, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Wick joined the Padres' major-league roster for the final month of the season and allowed six runs on 13 hits over 8.1 innings. The 26-year-old split his time in the minors between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso in 2018, posting a combined 2.67 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 64:31 K:BB across 54 innings. Wick was added to the Cubs' 40-man roster and should have a chance to earn himself a spot in the bullpen come spring training, but seems likely to start the season at Triple-A Iowa.

  • Cubs' Ian Clarkin: Claimed by Cubs

The Cubs claimed Clarkin off waivers from the White Sox on Tuesday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Clarkin, a supplemental first-round pick in 2013, spent the majority of the 2018 campaign with Double-A Birmingham, finishing the year with a 4.98 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 35:31 K:BB across 68.2 innings. The Cubs may look to pass the 23-year-old through waivers before the start of the season.

  • Cubs' Mike Freeman: Bounced from 40-man roster

Freeman was outrighted from the Cubs' 40-man roster Friday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.

Freeman only played in one game for the Cubs this season. As expected, he was cast off the 40-man roster in order to free up space for a younger prospect to be protected from the Rule 5 draft.

  • Cubs' Terrance Gore: Cast off 40-man roster

Gore was outrighted from the Cubs' 40-man roster Friday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.

Gore was basically exclusively utilized as a pinch runner for the Cubs since being called up to the major-league team once rosters expanded in September. Unsurprisingly, he was removed from the 40-man roster in order to allow Chicago to protect one of its younger prospects from the Rule 5 draft.

  • Cubs' Jack Reinheimer: Claimed off waivers

Reinheimer was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on Friday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.

Reinheimer will provide depth and versatility around the infield for Chicago after spending most of the 2018 campaign at the Triple-A level within the Mets' organization. During 21 games in the big leagues he went 5-for-30 (.167 average) with no extra-base hits and nine strikeouts.

  • Cubs' Cole Hamels: Cubs pick up 2019 option

The Cubs will exercise Hamels' $20 million option for 2019 on Friday, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports.

Hamels was dealt to the Cubs at the July trade deadline and posted a 2.36 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 74:23 K:BB in 12 starts, which was enough for the team to bring him back for 2019. The veteran left-hander hasn't posted a sub-3.00 ERA for a full season since 2014, so a repeat of those numbers doesn't seem particularly likely, but he certainly found a resurgence in Chicago after having 4.72 ERA and 1.37 WHIP through the first half of the season with Texas.

  • Cubs' Pedro Strop: Club option picked up

Strop's $6.25 million club option for 2019 was picked up by the Cubs on Thursday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.

This doesn't come as a surprise, as Strop was one of Chicago's most reliable relievers in 2018, notching 13 saves while posting a 2.26 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 8.6 K/9 across 59.2 innings. The veteran right-hander has been stellar since joining the Cubs in 2013, compiling a combined 2.63 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 10.2 K/9 over parts of six seasons (331.1 innings). He figures to fill a high-leverage relief role again in 2019, though it's unclear if he'll see any save chances with Brandon Morrow (arm) expected to be healthy.

  • Cubs' Johnny Field: Claimed by Cubs

Field was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on Thursday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.

This marks the fourth different organization Field will call home dating back to the beginning of the season. After spending the first four months of the year with Tampa Bay, he was briefly claimed by Cleveland before winding up on the Twins for the remainder of the campaign. Field played in 84 big-league games during his rookie season, hitting just .222/.254/.403 with nine home runs, 21 RBI and four stolen bases. He will serve as additional outfield depth for Chicago heading into next year.

Vasto was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on Wednesday.

Vasto has appeared in just six major-league games in his career, with all of them coming this past season. Across 4.1 innings of relief between the Rockies and Royals, he allowed four earned runs off six hits and two walks while striking out four. He finished the season with a solid 3.08 ERA and 1.34 WHIP at the Triple-A level and will fight for a spot on the big-league roster in spring training with Chicago.
