  • Rockies' Chris Rabago: Dealt to Rockies

Rabago was traded to Colorado from Kansas City in exchange for cash considerations Thursday, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.

Rabago was picked up by the Royals in the minor-league portion of Thursday's Rule 5 draft before being shipped to the Rockies. The catcher actually spent most of the past season within Colorado's organization before being claimed off waivers by the Yankees in August. Across 74 Double-A contests, he slashed just .197/.277/.330 with four home runs and 23 RBI.

  • Rockies' Chi Chi Gonzalez: Signs minors deal with Colorado

Gonzalez signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Tuesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Gonzalez underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2017 and was able to pitch in the low-level minors in September. It appears the 26-year-old is healthy, as there was no indication of any setbacks, and should be ready come spring training. Gonzalez had a decent showing during 2015 in his rookie campaign with a 3.90 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 67 innings, but hasn't pitched in the majors since July 2016.

  • Rockies' Chris Rusin: Agrees to deal with Rockies

Rusin signed a one-year, $1.68 million contract with the Rockies on Thursday, avoiding arbitration.

After posting a 2.65 ERA across 85 innings in 2017, Rusin took a step back in 2018, making two trips to the disabled list and struggling to a 6.09 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across 54.2 innings. The southpaw ended the season on a high note, however, compiling a 2.08 ERA and 10:2 K:BB across 8.2 innings in September. The groundball pitcher should once again fill a middle-relief role for the Rockies in 2019.

  • Rockies' Jordan Patterson: Dropped from 40-man roster

Patterson was designated for assignment by the Rockies on Tuesday.

Patterson was dropped from the team's 40-man roster in order to free up space for a more promising young player who needed to be protected from the Rule 5 draft. The 26-year-old spent all of the 2018 season with Triple-A Albuquerque -- his third season at the level -- hitting .271/.367/.525 with 26 homers in 118 games. He'll take a spin through waivers to determine where he lands next.

  • Rockies' Sam Hilliard: Protected from Rule 5 draft

HIlliard was added to the 40-man roster by Colorado on Tuesday.

Hilliard took the field for Double-A Hartford last year, and the Rockies have decided to protect him from the Rule 5 draft after he posted a .262/.327/.389 slash line with nine homers and 40 RBI over 121 games. Ryan Castellani, Justin Lawrence and Josh Fuentes were also added to the 40-man roster.

  • Rockies' Ryan Castellani: Promoted to 40-man roster

Castellani had his contract selected from Double-A Hartford on Tuesday.

This move protects Castellani from the Rule 5 draft. He spent the 2018 season repeating Double-A, struggling to a 5.49 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 6.1 K/9 across 26 starts (134.1 innings). Still, he's just 22 years old and will have time to prove himself as he presumably makes the jump to Triple-A in 2019.

  • Rockies' Josh Fuentes: Selected to 40-man roster

Fuentes joined Colorado's 40-man roster Tuesday.

Fuentes advanced to Triple-A Albuquerque in 2018, slashing .327/.354/.517 with 14 home runs and 95 RBI over 135 games. Given his evident potential, it makes sense that the Rockies have elected to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.

  • Rockies' Justin Lawrence: Protected by Rockies

Lawrence had his contract purchased from High-A Lancaster on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of FancredSports.com reports.

The Rockies opted to add Lawrence to their 40-man roster to protect him from the upcoming Rule 5 draft. The 23-year-old reliever spent all of 2018 with Lancaster, posting a 2.65 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 10.3 K/9 across 54.1 innings for the JetHawks. Lawrence could make his way to the majors in 2019 if he continues to impress.

  • Rockies' Brett Nicholas: Inks MiLB deal with Colorado

Nicholas signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Sunday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

The 30-year-old backstop spent all of last season in the Padres organization. He slashed .291/.353/.485 with 16 homers and 83 RBI at Triple-A El Paso but was unable to crack the big-league roster at any point. He has a .756 OPS in 110 MLB plate appearances in his career, though as things stand now, Nicholas figures to largely provide catching depth for the Rockies behind Chris Iannetta, Tony Wolters and Tom Murphy.

  • Rockies' Brendan Rodgers: Recovering from shoulder tightness

Rodgers is recovering from shoulder tightness, which is why he was scratched from the Arizona Fall League roster, Tracy Ringolsby of InsideTheSeams.com reports. "Instead of trying to push it to get him ready for the fall league we decided it was best to allow him to rest and strengthen this offseason," said Zach Wilson, Rockies senior director-player development. "It's a minor issue but best to get him physically ready for 2019."

The AFL would have been a good opportunity for Rodgers to rehab his prospect stock against less advanced pitching, as he struggled mightily (.232/.264/.290) after a late-season promotion to Triple-A. He was replaced on the AFL roster by Tyler Nevin. Rodgers should return to Triple-A at the start of the season while fellow prospect Garrett Hampson gets a crack at cementing himself as the Rockies' everyday second baseman.
