  • Athletics' James Kaprielian: Protected from Rule 5 draft

Kaprielian joined the Athletics' 40-man roster Tuesday.

Kaprielian missed the entire 2018 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2017, but his return to instructional league action in October and addition to the 40-man roster are good indications of his current health. The 24-year-old last pitched in the minors at High-A Tampa in 2016 -- before being traded from the Yankees to the Athletics -- and officially has only eight minor-league games under his belt.

  • Athletics' Grant Holmes: Joins 40-man roster

Holmes (shoulder) was added to Oakland's 40-man roster Tuesday.

Holmes had his contract purchased in an effort to protect him from the upcoming Rule 5 draft. He missed the majority of the 2018 season with a rotator cuff injury, returning to the mound briefly with High-A Stockton in August before getting shut down with another shoulder issue at the beginning of October. His status for the 2019 season is currently unknown.

  • Athletics' Luis Barrera: Joins 40-man roster

Barrera was added to the Athletics' 40-man roster Tuesday.

The addition protects Barrera from the Rule 5 draft after he began the 2018 season at High-A Stockton and had a .284/.354/.415 slash line with 10 stolen bases in 88 games before being promoted to Double-A Midland. The 23-year-old found even more success with the Rockhounds with a .328/.378/.450 slash and 13 stolen bases in only 36 games.

  • Athletics' Skye Bolt: Added to 40-man

Bolt joined Oakland's 40-man roster Tuesday.

Bolt's contract was selected to shield him from the Rule 5 draft. The 24-year-old prospect spent the majority of his 2018 season with Double-A Midland (78 games), posting a .256/.325/.446 batting line with 10 homers and 37 RBI.

  • Athletics' Tanner Anderson: Dealt to Oakland

Anderson was traded to the Athletics from the Pirates on Tuesday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.

Anderson was shipped to the Athletics so the Pirates could make room on their 40-man roster for prospects. The 25-year-old reliever appeared in six games for Pittsburgh in 2018, allowing eight runs over 11.1 frames while punching out six. He should have a chance to earn a roster spot with Oakland in spring training.

  • Athletics' Beau Taylor: Returns to Oakland on minors pact

Taylor re-signed Monday with the Athletics on a minor-league contract, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The contract likely includes an invitation to big-league spring training, though the 28-year-old is a long shot to crack to the Opening Day roster. Taylor will most likely be destined for the Athletics' Pacific Coast League affiliate in Las Vegas after slashing .248/.360/.348 across 431 plate appearances at Triple-A Nashville in 2018.

  • Athletics' Fernando Rodney: Club option exercised

The A's exercised Rodney's $4.25 million club option for 2019 on Wednesday.

Rodney opened the 2018 season with Minnesota before being dealt to Oakland in August. Overall, the veteran reliever posted a combined 3.36 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 9.8 K/9 across 64.1 innings of relief. He also registered 25 saves and seven holds. With Blake Treinen expected to reprise his role as the team's closer in 2019, Rodney figures to settle in as one of Oakland's primary setup men.

  • Athletics' Matt Chapman: Undergoes thumb surgery

Chapman underwent successful left thumb surgery in Los Angeles on Thursday. The club failed to disclose a specific timetable but he's expected to be healthy prior to spring training, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.

Specifically, Dr. Steven Shin performed an ulnar sided sesamoid bone excision along the left thumb. It's unclear when Chapman suffered the left thumb injury -- though he dealt with various right hand/wrist injuries during the year -- especially since his production remained at a high level throughout the final few weeks of the 2018 season. He finished off the year with a slash line of .278/.356/.508 with 24 home runs and 68 RBI in 145 games.

Hatcher was outrighted to Triple-A Nashville on Monday, Julian McWilliams of The Athletic reports.

Hatcher was dropped from the team's 40-man roster in order to free up space for younger players in need of protection from the upcoming Rule 5 draft. The veteran right-hander posted a 4.95 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 30:17 K:BB across 36.1 innings of relief for the A's in 2018.
