Diamondbacks' Cesar Puello: Signs with D-backs
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The D-backs signed Puello to a minor-league deal Wednesday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

He'll likely begin 2018 at Triple-A Reno, but Puello could make a push for a bench role in Arizona with a strong spring. In 1,039 career plate appearances at Triple-A, he's hit .289/.379/.447 while showing a useful combination of power and speed. At the very least, Puello is an interesting name to file away for the reserve rounds of deep NL-only leagues.

Diamondbacks' Albert Suarez: Goes to D-backs in Rule 5 draft
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Suarez was selected by the Diamondbacks with the 14th pick in the Rule 5 draft Thursday.

A 28-year-old righty, Suarez is a rare Rule 5 pick in that he has already logged 115.2 innings in the majors, working to a 4.51 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 88 strikeouts. He actually has a better career ERA as a starter (4.28) than as a reliever (4.77), but the Diamondbacks have no shortage of starters, so Suarez will attempt to make the team as a reliever. He will need to be kept on the active roster all year, otherwise he will be exposed to waivers and offered back to the Giants.

Diamondbacks' Chris Owings: To be super-utility man in 2018
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Owings (finger) will be used in a super-utility role next season, Steve Gilbert of reports.

Owings proved to be a versatile asset again in 2017, playing shortstop, second base, right field and left field for the Diamondbacks before suffering a season-ending broken finger at the end of July. While he chipped in 12 homers and 12 steals, his poor defense and below-average on-base skills aren't desirable traits in an everyday starter, prompting Arizona to shift him to a utility role. Owings was forced to undergo a second surgery on his broken finger in November, leaving his status for Opening Day up in the air.

Diamondbacks' Henry Owens: Claimed by Arizona
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Owens was claimed off waivers by the Diamondbacks on Friday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Owens was recently placed on outright waivers by the Red Sox after spending the 2017 season toiling in the minors with Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland. During 14 starts with Pawtucket, he posted a 3.91 ERA and 1.70 WHIP, while accumulating a 72:60 K:BB. He will need to cut down on the control issues that have plagued him the past couple of seasons in order to receive a shot at a major-league job in 2018.

Diamondbacks' T.J. McFarland: Returns to Arizona
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McFarland signed a one-year deal to come back to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

McFarland was recently non-tendered by the club at the beginning of the month, but will find his way back into the bullpen after appearing in 43 games for Arizona in 2017. During those outings, he posted a 5.33 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 54 innings, but held left-handed batters to just a .222 average and only allowed four home runs all year. The southpaw will likely be used in a similar capacity to this past season as a sixth- or seventh-inning arm.
