Astros' Preston Tucker: Designated for assignment
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Tucker was designated for assignment by the Astros on Friday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Tucker didn't spend any time in the majors during this past season following 46 appearances with Houston the year before. During his time with Triple-A Fresno in 2017, he hit .250/.333/.465 with 24 home runs and 96 RBI. The Astros will have a week before Tucker can be claimed on outright waivers.

Astros' Hector Rondon: Agrees to deal with Astros
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Rondon agreed to a deal with the Astros on Friday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

Rondon, who turns 30 in February, racked up 77 saves for the Cubs between 2014 and 2016, but his performance started to decline in 2016. He was almost completely out of the late-inning mix last season, with just 6.2 of his 57.1 innings coming in high-leverage situations. His strikeout rate has been around 29 percent in each of the last two seasons, and he notched a 3.43 xFIP in 2017, so it's possible he can return to his old form. However, unless Ken Giles really falters or gets injured, there won't be any save opportunities for Rondon with the Astros in 2018.

Astros' Anthony Gose: Selected by Astros in Rule 5 draft
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gose (elbow) was selected by the Astros with the 15th pick in the Rule 5 draft Thursday.

The Astros believed Gose had the most upside in the Rule 5 draft, citing his upper-90s fastball and power breaking ball from the left side. That said, it is clearly a bit of a lottery ticket, as Gose was only recently converted from the outfield to the mound, and was shut down in 2017 with an elbow injury. He will need to earn a spot in their bullpen this spring, as the Astros are in full-contention mode and don't have room to carry long-term projects on the active roster. Even if Gose maxes out, he would not be in line to get saves, so his upside would be capped as a high-strikeout setup man.

Astros' Joe Smith: Signs with Astros
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith signed a two-year contract with the Astros on Wednesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Smith started last season with the Blue Jays before being dealt to the Indians at the trade deadline. He put together another solid year, compiling a combined 3.33 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 71:10 K:BB across 54 innings of relief between both teams. The veteran reliever, who owns a 2.97 ERA across 11 seasons, should immediately step into a high-leverage relief role with his new club.

Astros' Colin Moran: Could see reps in left field
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Manager A.J. Hinch said the Astros may deploy Moran in left field during spring training, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.

With Alex Bregman and Yuli Gurriel well established at the corner infield positions, the Astros are looking at other possible options to get Moran playing time at the major-league level. The 25-year-old helped improve his stock last season by hitting .308/.373/.543 with 18 homers and 63 RBI in 79 games with Triple-A Fresno. His performance earned him a promotion, but he appeared in just two games before fouling a ball off his face and suffering a concussion and facial fracture that ultimately required surgery. Moran returned at the end of September and finished his brief major-league stint with a .364 batting average (4-for-11) and one homer in seven games. He played four games in the outfield with Fresno last season, and will look to acclimate himself to the position in spring training with hopes of breaking camp as a reserve.
