Rangers' Kyle Cody: Out 3-to-4 weeks with elbow inflammation
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cody is dealing with right elbow inflammation and will be shut down for the next 3-to-4 weeks before being reexamined, Levi Weaver of The Athletic Dallas reports.

Cody, the Rangers' 2017 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, had already been barred from pitching for the past three weeks and apparently hasn't noticed much improvement in his recovery from the elbow injury. The Rangers will order up more rest for the 23-year-old with the hope that it remedies the situation, so it could take until May before Cody debuts with a full-season affiliate. Cody finished the past season at High-A Down East, where he submitted a 2.05 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 35:10 K:BB in 30.2 innings.

Rangers' Cole Ragans: Undergoes Tommy John surgery
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ragans (elbow) was diagnosed Sunday with a torn UCL in his left elbow and will need Tommy John surgery, Levi Weaver of The Athletic Dallas reports.

Ragans, a 2016 first-round pick, will thus miss the entire 2018 season, and quite likely, a large portion of the 2019 campaign while recovering from the major arm procedure. The injury likely represents a significant hit to Ragans' outlook in dynasty format, as the 20-year-old will not only face a significant rehab but also miss out on critical development time. The 6-foot-4 left-hander spent the entire 2017 season in the Northwest League, posting a 3.61 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 57.1 innings.

Rangers' Yohander Mendez: Sent to Triple-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mendez was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Mendez was well behind more established pitchers in Mike Minor and Bartolo Colon in the pecking order for Opening Day rotation spots, so his assignment to the minors isn't surprising. The left-hander represents one of the better pitching prospects in the Texas organization and was impressive while running up a 3.79 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 137.2 innings at Double-A Frisco last season, but unremarkable secondary offerings limit his upside to that of back-end rotation filler if he sticks as a starter in the long run.

Rangers' Deolis Guerra: Sent back to minors camp
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Rangers reassigned Guerra to their minor-league camp Sunday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Guerra, a non-roster invitee, made five appearances in the Cactus League but didn't impress, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. The right-hander is expected to slot in as organizational bullpen depth at Triple-A Round Rock.

Rangers' Destin Hood: Homers Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hood went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in Saturday's game against the Royals.

Hood has hit well enough this spring to give manager Jeff Banister reason to allot him a roster spot as a fifth outfielder. He's hitting .360 with three home runs and 11 RBI. Hall and Rule 5 pick Carlos Tocci are battling for the that final outfield spot. It's a classic spring training story of one guy being better with the bat (Hood) and the other with the glove (Tocci). Being that we're talking about the fifth outfielder, the skills that Tocci brings -- his defense and speed -- may be the deciding factor.
