Scioscia optimistic about Morales' rehab

The Angels have been overly optimistic at nearly every step of Kendrys Morales' recovery, so why stop now?

Manager Mike Scioscia said before the Angels' 4-2 season-opening victory in Kansas City on Thursday that Morales would "definitely be running on this road trip."

Morales was cleared to resume baseball activities Monday. So far, he has been limited to batting practice and taking groundballs. He is expected to add some agility drills before testing his recovering left ankle by running.

Morales was shut down from all of that for a week after experiencing discomfort in his left foot, related to a lack of flexibility in his injured ankle. Morales is trying a new set of cleats with orthotic inserts to address the problem.

Even before that, Morales had barely progressed to some straight-line jogging down the first base line. Nonetheless, Scioscia said the team is optimistically targeting some time after April 7 for Morales to be able to play in games on a minor league rehab assignment. Minor league seasons begin April 7.

"That would be a window we're looking at," Scioscia said. "Obviously, we're not going to rush it. This jump from starting baseball activities to running 100 percent to being ready to play in games might come within four days, it might come within 10 days. You don't know."
