--3B Chipper Jones has shortened his swing, which allows him to see the ball earlier than he used to. So far, that's been good for six hits over the Braves first four games, leaving him four hits shy of 2,500 for his career.
--C Brian McCann got the start off April 4 after catching three consecutive day games; C David Ross started in his place. McCann came on late in the game, when manager Fredi Gonzalez went to the bullpen. Gonzalez says he plans to give all of his regulars a day off during the four-game series against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
--RHP Jair Jurrjens said his right oblique felt fine after his bullpen session at Nationals Park on Sunday, but a side session isn't the same as live action. Manager Fredi Gonzalez didn't want to have to blow out his bullpen if Jurrjens was able to last only one or two innings in his scheduled start April 4 against the Brewers. That's why the Braves went ahead and put him on the disabled list. "I want him for 32 (starts)," Gonzalez said. "Not just this one."
--RHP Tim Hudson retired the last 17 batters he faced in his April 3 start against the Nationals, but all anyone was talking about after the Braves' 11-2 rout was Hudson's head-first slide into home in the fifth inning. It was a one-run game at the time. Hudson scraped his knee and will need a new warm-up jacket, although he joked that at least the jacket gave him some padding. Manager Fredi Gonzalez professed no concern about the head-first aspect of the slide. "He's an athlete," Gonzalez said. Hudson, a two-way player at Auburn, was SEC player of the year in 1997.
--RHP Peter Moylan is breaking out the change-up. He experimented with it off and on all last season, but never had enough confidence in it to throw it in live games and in strikeout situations.
BY THE NUMBERS
0. Home runs given up by RHP Brandon Beachy in the majors. Until today, when Rickie Weeks hit one out at Miller Park.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"Every time I go, it looks so far away. I just pray that I'll get there." -- C Brian McCann on his stolen base April 3 against the Nationals. McCann has the Braves' only stolen base so far.
