Suddenly, the Giants' bullpen seems a bit tired at the worst possible time.
Heading to Coors Field.
Every manager would love a fresh bullpen on the eve of a series in the Mile High City, where relievers tend to be used early and often.
The Giants are coming off two straight games in which the bullpen worked a lot. First, Barry Zito made an early exit from Saturday's game (and now is on the DL with a foot strain). Second, the 'pen worked overtime because Sunday's 6-5 loss went 13 innings.
The Giants called up Ryan Vogelsong, who would take Zito's spot in the rotation (Friday against the Braves) -- unless he's used in relief in Denver before then.
The Giants hope they're not desperate enough to summon Vogelsong against the first-place Rockies, who'll be looking to prove themselves by staying hot with the reigning champs in town.
As for Zito, it's the first DL stint in his 12-year career. He was to return to the Bay Area to be re-examined and have extra X-rays to see if the damage if beyond what showed in the MRI.
