Bellator welterweight champion Yaroslav Amosov shed tears of joy in a cathartic performance against Logan Storley at Bellator 291. Amosov dominated Storley to unify the welterweight championships in Amosov's first fight after defending Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Amosov and Storley fought to a competitive split decision in 2020, but the sequel was a major departure from the original story. Amosov swept Storley on the scorecards to unify the Bellator welterweight title despite a 19-month absence from the fight game due to the ongoing battle.
"Ukrainian people. I love you. I love you, my people," Amosov said in his post-fight speech. "One year [ago] yesterday is when crazy Putin started a big war in my country. He wants to kill kids and every people who are Ukrainian. I want to say, thank you my Ukrainian army for defending my country. Thank you to those who help my country. Please do not forget what is happening. Today, this crazy guy attacks Ukrainians but we don't know what he'll do tomorrow."
Amosov beat Storley in every aspect of their fight at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday night. The Ukrainian champion repeatedly wobbled Storley with technical strikes to the head, body and legs. Not only did Amosov shut down every takedown attempt from the accomplished wrestler, but Amosov landed several of his own takedowns over five rounds.
Amosov improved to 27-0 as a professional fighter; meanwhile, Storley dropped to 14-2 with both of his career losses coming against the current champ.
