Joanne Calderwood already had a shot at the women's flyweight championship locked up but chose to take the risk of fighting at UFC Fight Night: Brunson vs. Shahbazyan in the interest of being active. It turned out to be a very bad risk for Calderwood's career.

Earning a world title shot is an impressive accomplishment and one that few fighters are ever able to achieve. Calderwood was simply outmatched by Jennifer Maia, who was able to win the striking battle on the feet before taking the fight to the ground and finishing Calderwood with an armbar in the first round.

The loss dropped Calderwood out of the top five at women's flyweight in the CBS Sports UFC divisional rankings and moved Maia into the rankings at No. 4. More importantly, UFC president Dana White has confirmed that Maia will receive the next title shot against dominant champion Valentina Shevchenko.

Saturday's UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs. Oleinik card features just one fight involving CBS Sports ranked fighters:

  • Heavyweight: No. 6 Derrick Lewis vs. Aleksei Oleinik
