With all of the new racetracks for the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season now out of the way, the qualifying metric used to set the starting lineup for most races is back for the foreseeable future. Good thing for Kyle Larson, because the metric has smiled upon him ahead of a trip to a track that holds a special place in his NASCAR career.

By virtue of NASCAR's qualifying metric, Kyle Larson has been awarded the pole for this weekend's FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The qualifying metric, which sets the lineup based on a formula that accounts for a driver's finish and fastest lap in the previous race as well as their points position, set the starting grid with one notable omission from last week's race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course: Indianapolis race winner A.J. Allmendinger is not entered this weekend, and is thus not accounted for.

Larson, starting up front at Michigan could mean trouble for the rest of the field, as Larson has enjoyed great success at the speedway in his Cup career. Larson earned his first career win at Michigan in August of 2016, and followed it up by sweeping the track's pair of races in 2017.
