In the final corner of the Southern 500, Kyle Larson truly sent it in a last-ditch effort to try and take the lead away from Denny Hamlin. It wasn't good enough to take the checkered flag, but it and all he did beforehand was good enough to get him the top spot at the green flag this weekend.

On Wednesday, Kyle Larson was awarded the pole for the Federated Auto Parts Salute to American Heroes 400 at Richmond Raceway by virtue of the NASCAR qualifying metric, which sets the starting lineup based on a driver's finishing position and fastest lap from the previous race as well as their points position.

The Top 16 in the starting lineup is comprised entirely of Playoff contenders yet again, giving certain drivers a chance to start off on the right foot in trying to rebound from trouble last week at Darlington. The opening race of the Round of 16 proved a hazard for several Playoff drivers, most notably Chase Elliott, William Byron, Kyle Busch, and Michael McDowell -- all of whom failed to finish due to crashes.
